The Nationals were swept by the Brewers.

The last time that the Nationals were swept in a series OF ANY KIND was ........ July 2nd, 3rd, and 4th of 2018 !!! ) O.o

One might presume that that is a sign of a dominant (or at least a well above average) team ........ but the Nationals were only 82-80 overall last year, and this year they just dropped below the .400 mark, at .389 (they have a 14-22 record.)

(Seemingly) strange, but true.

Scherzer's balky back and Strasburg's strong year make the wildcard assignment an interesting can to kick for the next few weeks.

The NL races except for the second wildcard are fairly settled - with another 7-10 days of solid play, the Nationals probably have another almost 10 days to game Tuesday October 1st anyway they want.

As bad as that bullpen is, I think Nationals fandom should join me in rooting for a Scherzer/Strasburg tandem day.

Max was really good in Atlanta this weekend.  If he does similar tomorrow and his next turn, he should be the guy.

But you’re right that they’ll likely clinch a WC spot without a chance to catch Atlanta with about a week to go.

I’d actually pair Corbin with Scherzer to have a lefty/righty effect.  As unreliable as their bullpen has been, I wonder if Martinez will lean on his starters in a one-game playoff.  I see that they didn’t use Doolittle to close last night.
