The Sally League is really lopsided this year.   Three teams at .647 winning percentage or higher, one other team with a winning record, and 10 teams with a losing record.      The two other dominant teams are the Pirates’ and Rangers’ affiliates.

The Shorebirds won their 45th game last night to improve to 45-14.   Per Steve Melewski, that win clinched the best half-season record the Shorebirds have ever had — with 9 games to go in the first half!    They lead their division by 6 games, so their magic number for the first-half division title is 4.

Despite losing their third straight game, the Shorebirds backed into the first half division title when Greensboro lost last night.   It’s the first division title for Delmarva since 2005, which speaks volumes about how shaky the funnel of young talent into our farm system has been in recent years.    But, it’s great to have the playoff spot locked up with 5 games remaining before the all star break.    Then we’ll see who (if anyone) gets promoted for the second half.

By the way, the last Delmarva team to make the playoffs, in 2005, didn’t have a single offensive player who ever played a game in the majors.    The pitching staff had two: Kevin Hart, who we traded for Freddy Bynum before Hart ever reached the majors, and Radhames Liz.    Erik Bedard also pitched a rehab game for the Shorebirds that year.   

Just goes to show, making the MiL playoffs doesn’t mean you’ve got a lot of developing major league talent on your team.   But I think this year’s Delmarva team definitely has a few guys who have a shot to be productive major leaguers.

Coach Kyle Moore took special satisfaction in winning the first half crown because a lot of the league’s better players will get promoted in the second half, so the first half teams are stronger.   He’s expecting several Shorebirds to get promoted.

The Shorebirds finished the first half at 48-21, winning the division by four games.    They didn’t exactly run through the tape, going 8-10 over the final 18 games after going 40-11 before that.   

Pitching and defense were the keys to Delmarva’s first half success.    They led the league in ERA (3.09), fewest runs allowed and strikeouts, and allowed the second fewest homers (only 34 in 69 games).    The defense led the league in fielding percentage, which I know is a crude measure of defense, but its essentially all we’ve got at the MiL level, and they had a pretty good edge on the next team on the list (.979 vs. .976).   

The offense also was .3 runs above average, good for 4th place, but really the success was about the pitching.

The Shorebirds began the second half with an amazing 12-11 win in 10 innings, coming back from an 11-2 deficit after 6 innings by scoring 4 in the 7th, 4 in the 8th, 1 in the 9th and 1 in the 10th.

On Adam Hall:

Moore managed Hall last season with Aberdeen, and has him for the second straight year.

“He’s a young player from Canada, and you never know when those guys are going to get it,” Moore said. “When they get it, it usually moves fast for them.

“He may have come along a little slower than we wished, but in the second half of last year when he got hot, he sort of got it, and he’s been off to the races ever since.

Moore decided he needed to focus Hall differently, and he likes the results.

“Mentally, he set some different kind of goals that weren’t so batting averaged-based, high school-type goals,” Moore said. “We worked on his mental makeup and what he hopes to achieve at the park every day.

“When we got that right, his results took care of itself as opposed to coming to the park and trying to get three hits and trying to hit .300. He’s coming to the park trying to be a pro about everything he does.”

      41 freaking years and here's this guy with the name pickles telling me I should be happy with 91 wins and getting owned in the playoffs again. 😂 😂 I saw a team that looked terrible the second half and probably didn't even deserve that spot the way they were playing .

      I don’t like the wall. I think it’s affecting our hitters. I’ve mentioned before that I think it has totally warped Mountcastle into something he was never really meant to be. The guy came up as a pull-heavy HR hitter, and in his first season-plus (725 PAs), he puts up 38 HRs and a 116 wRC+. Since then, the wRC+ is down to 110, and his approach has totally changed, with his pull numbers plummeting (down from 39% in 2021 to less than 28% this year). He still hits the ball hard, but constantly underachieves his batted ball data — probably because he’s trying to avoid the pull field and hitting balls to the deepest parts of pretty much every other park. Will the same thing happen to Mayo? Maybe he has more pure power, but it’s always going to be a challenge for a RH slugger to survive with that wall. So much harder to do damage.   Beyond that, I think it’s also creating a serious risk of changing our LH hitters’ approaches too. These guys (Henderson, Holliday, Cowser, 2/3 of Adley) have come up with a reputation for being able to drive the ball to all fields. But how long does that continue when they just can’t hit it out to the opposite field? Our LH hitters had a combined 44 wRC+ at OPACY, and only one HR. They had the 3rd most balls hit to LF at home by LHHs, but the lowest wRC+ of any team on those balls (for the second straight year). The Royals, ironically enough, were the only team that was lower than a 70 wRC+ — that’s how much worse our lefties fared going oppo (at OPACY) than everyone else’s. By player: Gunnar Henderson: 112 wRC+ / .160 ISO (51 PAs) Adley Rutschman: 10 wRC+ / .026 ISO (38 PAs) Anthony Santander: 14 wRC+ / .095 ISO (43 PAs) Colton Cowser: 58 wRC+ / .057 ISO (36 PAs) Ryan O’Hearn: 47 wRC+ / .091 ISO (55 PAs) Cedric Mullins: 23 wRC+ / .100 ISO (41 PAs) Jackson Holliday: -72 wRC+ / .000 ISO (16 PAs)   On the road, they had a combined 126 wRC+ (with 9 HRs) going to left field, so it’s not like they’re bad at it. It’s just Death Valley out there in LF for them at OPACY.  How long will it be until these LH guys just start going full pull-happy? Essentially, the opposite of what’s happened with Mountcastle. When (a) your team’s philosophy is to focus on doing damage and (b) you can’t DO damage to the opposite field — the rational endpoint is just to try to pull everything. I don’t think that’s a good outcome. I think it makes them much worse hitters in the other 81 games, and I think it’s a terrible waste of a bunch of really talented hitters with all-field abilities.

      The entire commentary on Hyde and the team seems odd but have to admit there does seem to be something off.   Team seemed adrift for most of the 2nd half.  A very talented team went off the rails midway through the season mostly due to core players struggling and rookies not performing or filling in adequately for a few injured starters.    None of the position player trade line acquisitions performed that well.     Hyde seemed in over his head or at a loss on how to correct things, but he must have convinced Elias that he has a plan to fix things.  Curious to see what happens with the coaching staff.
