I think Mejia was on my Rule 5 pref list (towards the back) in 2017. Haven’t really thought about him much since. I will probably dig into the non tendered list tomorrow and have some notes on guys I like.

The three I listed above were young , successful in the minors, and look like the best of the bunch. I avoided relievers and nonfielding OF

I wouldn’t rule out relievers if there is upside to be had. The Evan Phillips of the world might turn into solid middle relief but he has options and I’d chase bounceback or subtle tweak upside in the relief market if cheap.

I don't disagree..... But I'd avoid the guys who won't be here when we are good rule.

There are a few you could add and I'd even try out the Braves pitcher that's been mentioned more than a few times.

After reading through all this, I think the O's should

1) Sign Addison Russell and Luke Heimlich

2) Seek out a cheap sensible contract with Taijuan Walker, Jimmy Nelson, Kevin Gausman, or Tyler Anderson (Approach in that order) to fill a rotation spot or two.

3) Bring in Maikel Franco and have him and Ruiz battle it out for 3rd base in Spring Training.

4) Comb through the relievers on this list; some look really interesting.

Would you want the PR nightmare that Russell and Heimlich bring if there are talents arguably equal or better?

I like the idea of bringing in Gennett. He had a bad groin injury that pretty much made last year a lost year. In 2018, he was a 4.2 WAR player.

A couple of things, he’d pretty much be a direct Villar replacement. We can offer him all the leadoff ABs out there. A 1/3-4 deal should get him signed. Maybe less. Alberto can still get a ton of ABs playing vs LHP, and at 3B. Gennett should excel in our ballpark, and we can offer the best bounce back opportunity for him.

1. Gennett 2B L

2. Hays CF R

3. Mancini 1B R

4. Santander S RF

5. Nunez R DH

6. Ruiz L 3B

7. Smith Jr. L LF

8. Sisco L C

9. Russell R SS

Davis, Wilkerson, Alberto, Severino, Rule 5

What PR nightmare?  No one cares about the O's except us.  And, if it works out, it could be a PR blessing if both right the ship and are solid teammates and community members

    • Yes that is what happened last year to Adley.  I hope it is not a repeat even though this is someone from the Royals not Rangers where they stuff the ballot boxes and beat him out. Or the Yankees fans who think we are so evil vote for anyone going head to head against us.
    • And 2 steals. Good enough to put him at .726 OPS and 39 SB through June. Cowser only put up a .795 OPS there.
    • Both are more of regular season arms. They’re not going to be back end arms in the pen. Suarez wasn’t used like that in his brief stint. He pitches to contact vs hunting for Ks. Both are suited to be regular season SP or bottom half of your pen relievers.
    • I hope Adley beats out Perez. I believe this is where he lost to Heim last year. Mounty and Westburg will likely lose heads up.
    • We have an off day to give Mounty an extra days rest. We have an off day next Monday as well with the ASB looming. Mounty is close to making the ASG so I doubt he wants to hit the IL.  Meaning a RP would have to go for Mayo. I think we’re trying to keep Urias this season and move on from him in the offseason. Mayo is on target to be added as our extra player in September unless we have an injury.  It sure would be nice to bring Mayo up and let him get a ton of ABs to be ready for the playoffs.  At the end of the day, what’s worth more?  Urias as an insurance policy that shouldn’t get ABs in the playoffs, or developing Mayo that should get playoff ABs?
    • When Kremer comes back and if we get a #3 starter, would that help bolster the pen? You can move Suarez and Irvin/Povich into the pen.
    • Those three starts were going against @NYY, @Hou, and Texas. He’s slated to go @Oak with an extra day of rest.  We have to differentiate between regular season SP and playoff SP. Just like how we have to do with regular season RP and playoff RP.  Irvin, Povich, Kremer, and Suarez, are fine options to get you through 162.  Burnes, and Grayson, are our playoff options right now. We need a game 2/3 SP. The playoff RP core looks to be Kimbrel, Cano, Webb, Coloumbe(if healthy), and Perez. It would be nice to add two arms to the playoff RPs.
