Tracking Ex Oriole Thread

I know that another ex-Oriole is having a big night: Cruz. I feel strongly if DD would have signed him, we would have made the playoffs last year. So you win some, lose some.

I like Cruz. We lost last year because we did not pitch. You can feel whatever you wish. As Terry Crowley has told me "We hit enough to win three pennants."

If Chen had a better ERA than David Price (over a certain period) it's because Chen doesn't have to go beyond six innings, where Price can often easily make it to the 8th. Elite pitchers like Price are frequently trusted to clean up their own messes later in the game where with Chen, if he gets into trouble in the 5th or 6th, he's gone. With Chen your bullpen better be ready even on his best days. And yes, better to bench him when facing Toronto, Detroit and now when facing Baltimore too.

Chen does not think his elbow issue is anything to worry about, and expects to take the mound again next week.

Not ignoring that our pitching stunk bad but Cruz brought intangibles. The Snider/Lough platoon hurt us all year. WAR is great and all but doesn't account for leadership and chemistry. I'll take a good scout over a calculator any day. Agree to strongly disagree.

Nope. We lost because we did not pitch. Now Cruz and No Bud Norris OR Gonzalez? And a couple pitchers better than 2015 Tillman? Then you are talking. The owner chose to save his money for this year. And have a bigger payroll than the team down the road. His choice.

I hear ya but still would have made playoffs with Cruz. Probably wouldn't have gone very far, but would have made it. Not resigning Cruz was moronic with no solid plan B.

But the primary issue was indeed pitching, agreed.

Bud Norris looking good so far against Nats.

I watched Bud Norris's full 7 inning effort.

Steady 94 mph fb early, occasional 94 mph fb late -- mostly 92 mph late. Sharp breaking ball -- mostly at the knees and below. Pitched under control in and out. May have held the 1 - 0 lead with a better infield behind him.

Reminded me of why he was effective through 2014.

    • People are being a bit ridiculous with the holier than thou takes criticizing a little humor. I am not saying what happened couldn’t cause a significant concussion, but it would be a bit of a fluke if it did. Mullins barely hit him with the bat and he had a helmet on. The fact that it was in the back of the head did make him more vulnerable, but this wasn’t the type of thing you see and think he was lucky to be alive.  Guys have probably hit their heads harder on the top of the dugout or on the fence making catches.  And note this comes from someone whose son has suffered severe concussions and who is well aware of the dangers associated with them. In short, people need to lighten up a bit on guys like Roy.  It was a little gallows humor.
    • Yeah, you read that wrong. LA2 is one of my favorite posters here and he knows it. No harm, no foul. If you aren't familiar with the game threads, it doesn't matter what the team is doing, people complain about it and people did make that same joke in the game thread long before Roy said it here. Game thread in summary - when the O's are not doing well, it's insufferable, when they are doing well, it's mildly less insufferable. There, that wasn't hard. I'd appreciate it if you didn't assume I'm throwing shade at people. I'll leave that up to you to do, you're really good at it.
    • Comp a. Like Gunnar, and beavers…
    • Wasn't Westburg a 2nd round draft pick?  It's a little early to judge last year's draft.
    • Before Elias.  They generally haven’t missed on a 1st round or 1st round comp pick with the position players.   I trust they’ll make a good decision at #22 and #32.   Their track record in rounds 2-4, particularly on college position players and specifically the last three drafts is suspect.
    • Anyone want to guess what it would take to get Crochet from the White Sox?  We could send SG over to ask politely and remind them of what they missed out on Ortiz.  I'm sure that wouldn't stir up a hornet's nest.
