In all honesty, I am also usually intrigued by these pick ups, you never know when you’re going to find some thing and fix it, like John Means. Even if Means never does anything beyond what he’s already done, he will remain a poster child for possibilities.

We drafted John means, though. You get a John Means, you don’t let him go as a minor league free agent. Not saying it doesn’t happen, just that the comparison isn’t quite apples-apples

The point was that he was nothing but potential and then he found a way to reach that potential. The As did the same with Mark Canha, and the Jays did the same with Joe Biagini. It’s not really relevant that we drafted Means, only that something clicked for him, and we hope the same for whomever we pickup.

John Means was reasonably successful in the minors (3.84) ERA. He’s obviously been a better pitcher in the aggregate in the majors. Green has a slightly higher ERA in the minors (4.22). But at AA, he’s been a 5.76 ERA pitcher that includes 94 innings in 2019 over 6. If Greene were an Oriole I wouldn’t be bothered by it if he were cut.

Just an aside,  never seen that particular page. That's a ton of info all on one page! (That I usually use bbref and Cot's AND Google to find...)

Roster Resource used to be an independent site.   They affiliated with Fangraphs sometime this year.

That reference reminded me of the daze when we used to "roster bate" on this very website.  Ahh, the good ol' daze of *SG, RShack and John Domen!

*Oh wait

I have to say, that Forbes article Weams posted, and his numbers, makes me (mildly) hopeful that Greene has figured something out. Ditched the useless slider and relied more on the (I can spot it anytime) curveball and his FB. I know, 28, and he may only be a bullpen arm, but he had a great (half) year in 2019 and then DESTROYED the AFL. What did Roch post, .300-something WHIP! At the least he might be a small valuable piece. Pen or better yet in the rotation.

I think he would be fine as a 2 pitch pitcher out of the pen. especially in a specialist or closer role.

Yes, this is good.  Been trying to understand the AAA phase as well.  Seems that you need to place players on the 38 man AAA roster to avoid selection in the minor league phase.  IF they are selected in the minor league phase, there is no roster requirements - the player just gets moved to the new org.  I mention this because after discussing if Zach Pop gets added ot the 40 man to protect from Rule 5, it appears he is not even on the 38 man AAA roster.  He is listed on the roster of the AA Baysox, meaning he can be selected by another org in the minor league phase without any risk.    Am I missing something?

I'm pretty sure that Fangraphs is listing where they currently believe the players will be playing (active roster).  For example, they list 26 men on the MLB roster, not 40.  Showing AA for Pop just means that they currently are projecting him to start the season there.  It doesn't mean that Pop won't be on the protected list for the minor league phase of the rule 5 draft.  Just as there are not 40 active players on the MLB team, there are not 38 active players on the AAA team.  And some of the guys that will be on the active roster of the AAA team are actually on the MLB 40-man roster.  There are 78 players between the 2, but some 25-28 of them will start the season at a level other than MLB or AAA.
