Should we claim Ka'ai Tom?

They both stink and we just drafted 37 outfielders.  Stewart at least has a small chance to stick around as a LH bench guy.

no he doesn’t, at least he certainly hasn’t shown that so far. I don’t know when the clock strikes midnight on a guy like this, but for me it was a couple of hours ago.

I don’t disagree with anything you said, but my point wasn’t that Stewart hits marginally better than McKenna. I don’t think I mentioned offense at all. The point is that McKenna offers more than Stewart. I certainly agree that he should have(had) a long look, Because of his draft pick Pedegree: however there comes a time when you’ve had enough of a look. Do you think he would still be here if he were a fifth round pick? Maybe, but I don’t think so. First round picks have more invested in them and therefore get a longer leash. But Stewart doesn’t hit well or defend well. At least with McKenna, you’re getting 50% of the equation.

Mckenna is valuable on defense. He’s not a starter but he is a late inning defensive replacement.

I’m not pushing any particular agenda or narrative. As I’ve made clear, I want all of the prospects( even the marginal ones) to get looks, Especially with a team like this. Also, it is logical, and simple human nature, that a higher draft pick is going to get a longer look. But once a player has shown who he is, there’s no argument against moving on.

It is quite possible that McKenna has also shown who he is, But who he is still has value to this club now. He might not be worthwhile when the team is winning 85 to 90 games, but he certainly is right now.

I would argue based on the difference in OPS this year that McKenna has more value than Stewart because he can play defense and run the bases well. Stewart has to hit well at a minimum to have any value because that's his entire value prop as a baseball player.

More than likely Stewart's time is up after this season, but if there's an opening at 1B/DH maybe he gets one more chance next spring training.

He was OK in 2020 and 2018.   I’d rather have a .615 OPS McKenna than a .688 Stewart.   But we’ll see if Stewart can get his offensive act together.  At .750 it becomes a close contest, and Stewart was at .768 before this season, so it remains possible he’ll rebound.

I came here to ask why McKenna  was just option instead of Stewart. McKenna is a valuable defensive replacement, even if he doesn’t hit any better than you or I. But “valuable defensive replacement“ has meaning. The only thing Stewart has on his side of the ledger is that he’s a first round pick, and that is very weak sauce.

Yep

You can literally make an argument for everyone that hits the waiver wire that we should claim. I’m pretty sure of all of our DFAs this year only Sisco got claimed.

And Armstrong? Nonetheless your point is valid and I doubt we have anyone of interest to anyone except our big three and maybe Urias.

Armstrong was a trade.

Jay Flaa, Chance Sisco, Connor Greene, Shaun Anderson, Brandon Waddell, and Rio Ruiz were all claimed this season by other teams once DFA’ed.

I didn’t even know Greene was gone. Do you know how many of those guys went on the new teams’ active roster?

And I don’t remember Brandon Waddell at all

I’ll check tomorrow. I know Sisco was sent to AAA right away and so was Flaa, who was eventually called up. I’m not sure on Ruiz and everyone else I think was optioned down, then brought up at various times (like the Orioles have done.)

Still added to the 40-man. We could have optioned him as well.

Evan Phillips wound up in Tampa, not sure if they claimed him on waivers or how he got there.  He pitched one game for them, 3 innings, then they waived him and the Dodgers DID claim him on waivers from Tampa.

And Shawn Armstrong is on the Rays.  Called up today.

Wade LeBlanc went to St Louis and joined their rotation until getting hurt and winding up on the IL.

We're a horrible team but there sure does seem to be a lot of interest in our rejects.

Phillips was released about a month ago by Baltimore.

Right. My point was more that them adding senidng him to AAA doesn't discount that he was indeed claimed.

I’m not sure I get what you meant.

Baltimore did option him. Then they DFA’ed him and he was claimed. Phillip asked who was on teams active rosters and I mentioned Sisco was in AAA and where some other players that were claimed went. It didn’t discount the fact he was claimed. He was optioned and then removed from the 40 for a spot. He just didn’t clear.

    • Great post.  I like your optimism, and I'll try to believe this team can turn things around just in the nick of time like some classic Hollywood baseball movie.
    • I think Elias has mostly done an excellent job with one exception -- he seems like he treats the bullpen like an afterthought.  I doubt that will happen again this coming offseason. I don't really blame him for the current offensive struggles overall.  Just too many injuries late in the season.  That said I don't understand how we went from dealing Austin Hays, Connor Norby and Ryan McKenna just so we could land the right handed bat of, gulp, Austin Slater.
    • Man this team has no shot. Right now they may not even make it.
    • Most of these guys are only playing because of injuries to starters.  But Austin Slater I'm guessing was brought in to replace the traded Austin Hays.  The problem is that Slater has shown little ability to hit lefties this year, after hitting them pretty well up to this season.  This must be why two teams dropped him before the O's picked him up.  I know he was let go much earlier in the season, but is Ryan McKenna actually worse than this guy?  I don't understand how the front office went from releasing McKenna to later trading Hays and Norby -- thinking their right handed bats could adequately be replaced by someone like Slater.
    • I'm willing to give Elias some rope because of the strict limitations he was under with JA but he better not be so damn conservative again this year and let every serviceable FA out there sign with other teams while he's busy picking up reclamation projects again. Minus Burns of course.
    • I agree completely that it’s irrelevant whether it worked.  But I don’t agree that bunting is clearly the right decision in either scenario, and I think that decision gets worse if it’s intended to be a straight sacrifice rather than a bunt for a hit. To be clear, the outcome you’re seeking in tonight’s situation, for example — sacrifice the runners over to 2nd/3rd — lowers both your run expectancy for the inning (from 1.44 to 1.39) and your win expectancy for the game (from 38.8% to 37.1%). It increases the likelihood of scoring one run, but it decreases the likelihood of scoring two runs (which you needed to tie) and certainly of scoring three or more runs (which you needed to take the lead).  And that’s if you succeed in getting them to 2nd/3rd. Research indicates that 15-30% of sacrifice bunt attempts fail, so you have to bake in a pretty significant percentage of the time that you’d just be giving up a free out (or even just two free strikes, as on Sunday). The bunt attempt in the 3rd inning on Sunday (which my gut hates more than if they’d done it today) actually is less damaging to the win probability — decreasing it only very slightly from 60.2% to 59.8%. More time left in the game to make up for giving up outs, I guess, and the scoreboard payoff is a bit better (in the sense that at least you’d have a better chance to take the lead).   At the bottom of it, these things mostly come down to gut and pure chance. The percentages are rarely overwhelming in either direction, and so sometimes even a “lower-percentage” play may work better under some circumstances. You would have bunted both times. I wouldn’t have bunted either time. Hyde bunted one time but not the other. I don’t know that anyone is an idiot (or even clearly “wrong”) for their preference. Either approach could have worked. Sadly, none of them actually did.
    • Wasn't Hyde always thought of more or less as a caretaker? I'm on the fence about him coming back. I totally get the injuries and that needs to be taking into consideration but man this collapse some heads have to roll who's I'm  mot sure
