It's an intimidation tactic.  It's like when one of my kids started playing water polo.  I have never played water polo and know nothing about it, but I gave him this advice:

Your first shot on goal, don't try to score a goal.  Just throw the ball as hard as you can at the goalkeepers face.  This will bring his arms in for the next time you try to score and make it easier.
