Wander Franco would have been worth 6.86 rWar with same number of plate appearances of Randy Rice-a-Rena?

Damn, that's a helluva season.

(Just in case there are any Sox or Yanks fans reading, Arroz is rice in Spanish.)

Jose Mesa - Joe Table

Pedro Feliz - Pete Happy

Jorge Posada - George Past

La posada is a festival. It Doesn’t mean past.

Arozarena = Sandy rice

There used to be a poster on here with an avatar of a Tejada jersey number 10 but had “roof” in place of tejada.  Made me laugh.

He also dug himself a huge hole at the start of the season.  Was nice to see him recover from that even if he didn't finish strongly.

He had 2 good months in June and August. The other 4 months were ordinary at best, hardly worthy of ROY

I am with @Roll Tide on this. He was a bright spot this year. Let's be happy we had a rookie who is in that talk and has a good future in front of them! There is no need to bash the bright note we have in RMC down to nothing, be excited, be happy and be glad we have this kid on our team!

Is anyone bashing him?

My takeaway from reading this is that no one was saying hey good job RMC you did great! it was all well he wasnt really that good or he shouldnt be in the discussion, just seems very debbie downer in here

He’s not a ROY, but he’s a solid average player, and god knows we need some more of them. He’s not the first guy I shove out of the lifeboat, but he wouldn’t be the last, either.

Well, let me put things in a more positive light.   There were at least 72 hitters and 68 pitchers who played enough to complete their rookie status in 2021 (career total of 130 AB or 50 IP; there are also players who completed rookie status  based on service time criteria that I can’t easily track).   So that’s at least 140 guys, probably more like 150.   And there’s another couple hundred players who debuted in 2020-21 but still haven’t played enough to lose their rookie status.   Of all those guys, Mountcastle was probably in the top ten or so.   That’s pretty damned good if you ask me, even if there are some better ROY candidates.

He's a significant player to me as the first one I expect to be part of the Next Good Team to hit the show.   Of course any successful team needs its Means/Mullins type wins, but those feel less like aimed shots and more like found money.

Santander was almost like that too, but he's gotten squishy.

Mountcastle and the high school pitchers are also kind of fun guys for the mix, since I feel like for the present regime they are the kind of draft choices we wouldn't be caught dead with these days.   I see some similarities between say Henderson/Mayo and Mountcastle, but would guess even there the younger guys weren't the free swingers Mountcastle was as a prep.

I think somewhere between Grayson and Mountcastle there's a threshold where maybe your talent is just rare and brilliant enough you can hit the ground running, but Mountcastle to me was always going to be someone MLB arms would school for a while.

It was a nice 60th percentile kind of year for me, and now Chris Sale is starting to have to be scared.   He'll be more scared in the future.

Mountcastle Is not among the three finalists for ROY.  It’s Arozarena, Franco and Garcia (as I guessed in the OP).

And with all respect, that is as it should be. Mountcastle has too many issues to be a serious ROY candidate. He will be a solid player, and will make many many dollars, but he’s not elite and never will be.

Arozerena Probably has the award locked up, but my own choice is Garcia. It was so much fun to watch him play defense, and he was able to hit as well. And such a surprising story! nobody expected him to do anything, not even the Rangers.

Wrong Garcia.

    • Oh, I thought you were taking about his hitting in high leverage situations.
    • Frustrating sure, but boring is not what I would I say. We do steal bases at times. I would like for us to play more small ball sometimes and it is frustrating to see us be so homerun happy. I think with Westy back, we will see a resurgence of timely hitting as that is very contagious.   We saw that at the beginning of the year. Amazing sight to see for sure. I think the most disheartening thing that really shocked me is the apathy and outright disgust I’ve seen from O’s fans toward their team. Perhaps we have been spoiled? No idea. Maybe expectations were too high? No idea, but frankly, a lot of yall focusing on other things and simply not watching/posting would make next season a lot more enjoyable. This is the first time since 96-97 where we make the playoffs in back to back years and you guys have been acting like some real lame jerks this whole dang season. Frankly, yall should be ashamed of yourselves. We are an incredibly young team and with that come highs and lows, but yall don’t see that. You just love to complain and moan and bloviate. Where’s the heart? Where’s the loyalty? Where’s the gratitude? You’d think with all this team has overcome, especially being so young, y’all would be happy, but no. So go off on your little bike rides or whatever. Go watch a movie if this saga seems boring to you. I don’t care. Just for once this season, keep your immense negativity to yourself.
    • Really an amazing run, 4 straight years. I completely agree with the ranking, too. There's no way Kjerstad is still a prospect though, right? 45 days is the cutoff and he's played in 48 games.
    • i think we all are going to have ptsd from that 9th inning for a while,it was that brutally bad . they need to do some special to get us to forget about it
    • wow,did gunnar and adley have to do this last season?
    • I suggested that earlier but I think it's probably a bad play with no out. The O's have like 85% probability of scoring. There is a huge downside risk of Mullins popping up the bunt for a double play. He could also whiff on the bunt making at least Holliday an easy out. With one out and only 65% probability of scoring it's a much better play. I think if Santander and Mullins were reversed in the lineup Hyde may have done it but not when you have two shots to get the run in.
