Excerpts from Joe Maddon/Tom Verducci's new book...

Inside the MLB Culture Wars That Led to Joe Maddon’s Firing (msn.com)

“Right now as a manager, you need to understand you are going to be controlled,” Maddon says. “You’re really going to be required or asked to do exactly what the front office wants you to do. The trick then would be to somehow be able to build relationships—but even then, your ability to freely think, work and suggest with these players can be constricted. It’s just the way of the world right now.”

Makes me wonder what's going on behind the curtain in the warehouse and clubhouse.  O's are clearly part of the new wave.

Definitely an interesting concept... but also have to realize there could be some sour grapes built in after he was fired.

Yep.  Maddon is kind of a blend between the old and new IMO as well.  He had some (then) non-traditional line-ups and use of pitchers in Tampa and Chicago.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and make a prediction about the book.

On the teams where he won a lot, Maddon is going to say that he was making most of the big decisions and deserves much of the credit along with the players.

On the teams where he didn't win as much, he is going to say that the front office was restricting his decision making too much and the FO deserves most of the blame.
