Any model will tell you the same thing about Kyle Gibson: he has a bunch of pitches and he commands them well, but none of the pitches is going to appear on a top-10 list or on a hot tweet. That’s enough to make him interesting despite a bad fastball, but what’s actually most interesting about Gibson is how uninteresting he is. Here’s another way of saying it:

That is not the list of the best pitchers since 2014. The way injuries and age work, it isn’t even a list of the pitchers most likely to put up a ton of innings this year. But it does tell us a little about how Gibson has managed to put up innings despite not usually being on sleeper lists. (And it doesn’t hurt that he’s in the best 5 percent in baseball when it comes to Jeff Zimmerman’s injury percentiles.)

You know what these other pitchers on this here deep sleeper list will not give you, most likely? Innings.

There’s a similar story forming on the East Coast — high-stuff, poor command arm stuck between the rotation and the bullpen — but the details are slightly different in important ways. Hall may have a reputation for poor command, but he actually located his slider well, and that’s huge in a breaking ball league. He’s projected for a 101 Location+! Poor fastball command is not necessarily something that is super sticky year to year, so an improvement there would be huge and not entirely unexpected.

The second thing is that Hall has a complete repertoire as is, and doesn’t need a new pitch. His plus-plus slider is the foundation.

The changeup is above-average due mostly to its 10+ mph velocity differential. But he also keeps it down well:

And his fastball is high enough stuff that it could survive some velo loss in longer stints. He’s got what it takes to be a starter, and a little fastball command is all he’s looking for to break out. Oh, and some extended opportunity: it’s actually getting a little crowded in that Baltimore rotation.

Not a deep sleeper, but Sarris' summation on Grayson Rodriguez was "bonkers" on Rates and Barrels yesterday.

Diving very deep into the baseball nerd realm, let's see if Eno wins the bid for Grayson in AL LABR Saturday night.

I am going to guess the LABR room prices Grayson around the 20th best SP in the league, based on their expectation of his 2023 baseball card stats.
