I would think there is more to this transaction.   In order to get Givens off the 60 day IL they had to make space of the 40 man roster.  After he was there they could DFA him.   So there may be more players involved.

No, not if you DFA him immediately.   It would be stupid to require someone to be removed from the 40 man for ONE SECOND so that you could activate a guy, then DFA him and one second later have that spot ont he 40 man roster available again.   There's no way it works that way.

Why what?   Why DFA him? 

He's healthy enough to come off the IL;  he can't be sent to the minors.  You want him on the active roster?

If they think he cant help us this year there is no reason at all to keep him on the 40 man.  

Maybe the Orioles will still vote him a World Series share.  Who knows?

My guess is they didn't like what they saw in the rehab appearances and figured why not see if anyone signs him so they can at least recover the pro-rated portion of league minimum salary.

Looks like it was $3M for the year and $2M for the O's to buy out. So the 1yr/$5M number was including the assumption of buyout (e.g. Givens makes $5M minimum).
