Hank Peters

He's on the HOF committee ballot this week, with results to be revealed Sunday night.

Dan O'Dowd just paid him a nice tribute, walking through his career from the Kansas City A's when he was part of the front office acquiring Campaneris, Fingers and others through the Cleveland swansong when O'Dowd credited him with the vision to do the early career extensions for the '90's Indians foundation guys.      He was '79 and '83 Executive of the Year while here.

Jay Jaffe's review of his candidacy had the detail he was one of the GI Joes in Western Europe like many of the men in their 20's around then.     He was a St. Louis kid in the Browns front office in '53, but orphaned from his MLB life for a bit when the Club moved to Baltimore.    In '65, he got to make the first 1-1 (Rick Monday) when the draft entered the game's structure.

If you follow the "Don Baylor trade tree", it leads to Dempsey, McGregor, Tippy, Roenicke and Stanhouse from the end of the Orioles dynasty rosters.

Makes you wonder if the O's demise in the late 80's could have been avoided by keeping Peters at the helm.  Probably not, given the free hand he was given in Cleveland; but man, he sure did take a lot of front office talent with him.   I would have loved to have seen John Hart follow Peters as Baltimore's GM.
