The magic number is 4 vs the twins unless it ends in 3 way tie.  If we win today and Saturday that put us at 87-68 with 7 left so the worse we can do is 87-75.  That would give the Tigers 2 more losses putting them at 75 and if the Twins lose both they also have 75.   So even if the both win out it would be a 3 way tie it goes to head to head with 3 teams.  In that scenario the worse we could go is .500 and the tigers are already under .500 in that matchup.  If it goes to just us vs each team we would the tie breaker vs both of them with better record in divisions.

Your last statement I dont believe is correct with a 2 way tie against the Tigers in this scenario. We would both be 87-75 and 30-22 in the division. It would then go to interdivison record, which I believe we would win by 2 games.

Yes I should have said by inter division we hold tie breaker on both if head to head.  3 way tie we would finish ahead of Tigers but behind Twins but still get in.   So the magic number is really 5 but with asterisk on that because it could be 4 with the right 2 wins vs Tigers or Twins.

Agreed. So to put it very simply, if we win 2/3 and the Twins lose 2/3 this weekend we are IN.

The Tigers are a fun story, reminiscent of the ‘22 birds a little bit (if that team had had a CY winner heading the rotation). But we need to end the dream for them this weekend. Take care of business versus Detroit and next weeks games will hardly matter. We can get our staff set up for the WC series after their next turn. That would be ideal.

I like the '22 Orioles comp.   It kind of makes me wonder if Scott Harris went to talk to Tarik Skubal and the guys to apologize/put context on why the front office's decision was the club's on field performance wasn't good enough.

Odd we talking about this after being up like 15 games on them at one time.

I don’t really understand the Mariners part.  We are 86-68.  If we win tomorrow that gives us 87 meaning the worst we finish is 87-75.  One Mariners loss gives them 76 loses so why would they need 2 losses.

    • I know. I'm a hand wringer and a whiner when it comes to this team. I sometimes annoy myself with all this baseball nonsense. But really deep down,I'm still the 8 year old who lived and died with every Oriole game. Still. Im that kid. So when this team was really horrible like for most of the second half, it almost made me nauseous just to watch them lose in all kinds of ways. Then all those injuries in a wave. I really felt they weren't going to make the postseason at all. But baseball is a crazy game, and a light switch can be turned on in an instant. Maybe that Santander walk off HR on Thursday threw a switch. Because Friday night, this was a different team. They still strike out a lot, and Burnes was brilliant, but I feel maybe something is moving. Seeing Coluombe come in and strike two batters out, and Webb, not as good, but good enough with a big lead...and to see Coswer and McCann blast two, and Tony again with a HR...It got my juices flowing. Look maybe they wont play well this weekend, maybe they will. And then the dreaded Yankees might break our hearts. But why think that way now.?Urias is coming, then Westburg, then maybe Mounty, and even possible Grayson at the end . If we can somehow put the pieces together and get our mojo back, and have the players contribute, we maybe, just maybe, might have a little ray of hope.I still think this roster is talented when all our pieces are together, and as good as anyone when we are playing well. So, I'm not asking for a miracle. I'm just asking for a chance to see this team with most of the pieces together again, and compete.Maybe it's even a long shot, but I am still that 8 year old living and dying for a chance to see my boys make me proud. And these are my boys.
    • Velocity was 1.5-2mph down across the board. Movement was good, especially the sweeper. The fastballs worry me at that velocity though... not sure he should be immediately high leverage in the way he used to be.
    • Nicely done. Lol. Yes I remember that with Minnesota.
    • Is there any chance of the Orioles catching any of the teams in front of them with large crowds over the weekend?
    • Wells and Cowser are neck and neck in terms of fWAR. Could go either way
    • Joey Ortiz was in the running for the National League ROY for a while, but there’s too many other guys. However, he will almost certainly be a gold glove finalist, and the Brewers are all very happy to have him. I hope Colton wins, but if the Yankees win the division, as seems likely, I think the national love will go back to them
