It's because where they are throwing most of the time -- to first base.  Right handers throw across their body to first -- there's more force on the throw when throwing across the body.  This is especially true if the infielder is throwing when already in motion.

Lefties throw away from the body to first -- to their left -- which results in a much weaker throw most of the time.  And like someone else said double plays would be nearly impossible.

If you're right handed, take some grounders and throw to third base as if it were first base.  That's what it feels like for lefties to throw to first on a regular basis.
