Giants are putting some guys on waivers

Farhan is breaking up the twins, bummer!

This kind of behavior is really going to make Juan Soto want to come play for them - the 2025 Giants can't use a pitcher like Taylor Rogers??    If Rubenstein really does have a lot of powder dry...

Rogers' 3-year term 2023-2025 same as Zach Eflin.

Matzek is on the 60-day IL and hasn't appeared since May, but his October strikeout of Mookie Betts the year of the Braves run was one of the strongest pitching feats I've noticed, intermittently watching other postseason games sometimes.

On paper, a good break for us as our Giants games are still to come.

Thairo Estrada has a vaguely familiar ring to him as a guy who was a very useful player for the Giants over the last few seasons (7.5 fWAR in 1200 PAs from 2021-2023) but has totally collapsed offensively this year.

Unlike Austin Slater, he doesn’t have a significant platoon advantage on either wing, so it’s a little tricky to imagine a clean/clear-cut role for him. But even in the midst of this terrible season, he’s very likely to be a better player than Livan Soto. He’s owed the pro-rated portion of $4.7M, so about $840k.

I’d put in the claim. Can just non-tender him in the offseason unless it clicks in a major way.

Interesting. I don't remember guys of this quality coming available at this time of year last year. Rogers has a year of control too. He would be perfect for us if he's still available. Estrada is interesting too. Not sure why he isn't hitting this year.

The Angels traded for a bunch of guys at the deadline to try and win with Ohtani and then traded a bunch off for salary relief when it was apparent the plan didn't work.

Interesting. I still don't understand what Yates and Robertson are doing on the Rangers.

I read that Melvin doesn’t trust him. In terms of leverage situations, Rogers ranks 8th in Giants relievers in leverage spots used.

We don’t know our budget. $12 million is pretty steep for a middle inning Lefty. Plus, he has no options.

We really need the last 2-3 spots in the pen for fresh arms. That’s just life in the AL East and present day MLB.

Ye olde McCovey Chronicles take: https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2024/8/28/24231023/giants-waivers-thairo-estrada-taylor-rogers-tyler-matzek

Farhan Zaidi gave Taylor Rogers the big contract and hired Bob Melvin a year later.

Certainly the potential Gunnar vs. Juan Soto in the postseason, and the day to day relative positions of BAL and NYY make it interesting if he makes it as far as those Clubs.

To the extent it is generally considered good policy we need to add a strong reliever this winter - Rogers represents a good one for 2025 alone.

I think fair to say performance wise you'd expect him to be a better Gregory Soto, should a Club have need of a player like that and "financial flexibility".     If all the Clone GM's pass him, and he gets big outs to beat us in a game, as an Orioles fan for me it will feel adjacent to Tanner Scott having a hand in dealing these Orioles losses down in Miami.

1 game probably won't matter in this race..

That's the expensive pitcher - Thairo Estrada is a data point what the 2024-25 off-season may have in store for the Amed Rosario, Jorge Mateo or Ramon Urias tier player.

This is just a curiosity, but I've never seen a player whose defensive metrics are as unaligned as Thairo Estrada's.

Lifetime value at 2B for Thairo Estrada:

+31 (OAA)

0 (UZR)

-18 (DRS)

Just goes to show... something?

He-s somewhere between Ozzie Smith and Mark Trumbo at 2B.  I think that really helped.

If we claim him, can we hold off on putting him on the MLB roster until 9/1?  If so, there is a non zero chance of this happening.

The argument for it is he could be a guy that could come in to be a lefty specialist in the playoffs, and that he’s got playoff experience as well.

The bullpen will probably have to get 9ish outs when Burnes pitches in the playoffs and 12+ when Suarez and Kremer pitch. That’s a lot of outs, and Rogers factors into that calculus.

We can figure out next year’s team in the offseason. Does Ruby say ok and allow Elias to spend our way out of the SP injuries a bit?

Coming of WS win perhaps they think it’s a bad look.

Overall I keep wondering if MLB pushes back the trade deadline to mid August. Many people are for it especially with the draft being so late now. Would vary by year obviously but would think 2/3 teams a year may be sellers 2 weeks later. Texas would have been one of them. May help to put a damper on this.

I get why teams do it but it’s an exploitable rule for teams on the edge of the playoff race. Obviously they can’t claim everyone but the last couple of teams in or out get a distinct advantage.

Agreed, a later deadline makes sense especially now that they got rid of waiver trades. I guess they want the deadline early to force more teams to try and compete.

    • I think yesterday was the nail in the coffin for him being on the playoff roster, assuming we make it.
    • I feel that way, too. I keep thinking about 2005.  2005: 10 games over .500 on June 20th. 1st place, two games up.  Shortly after they went on a 2-16 skid, and their last game at .500 was at the the start of that awful home 4 game series in late July when the White Sox swept them, and Raffy was exposed as taking PEDs. They fell under .500 that series and kept on sinking.  2024: 24 games over .500 on June 20th. 2nd place, a half game back.  Then immediately lose five straight. Due to their great start, they can't finish 14 under .500, but the dive feels eerily similar with all of the injuries, dormant bats, and all happening at the same time of year.  The floor coming out from underneath them feels a lot like it. That team was cooked by late July and by the first week of August, Mazzilli got the axe. That won't happen with Hyde this time, as they had a fine start this year, but this can't happen two years in a row under him.
    • I know …. Gotcha. Trade away Stowers & Norby for Garbage and pick up Rivera & Jiminez. And be surprised when you offense stinks.
    • You could cut and paste this write up for about every team in the organization.
    • It’s because the strategies that they are taught and employ work much better in the minors with pitchers with worse stuff and command than in the majors.  This, in turn, inflates their minor league stats.  The good news is that thus far after an adjustment period those players do seem to adjust and do well.
    • This was the lineup today: The problem is injuries. Hyde didn't have to run out this sort of lineup in May or June. You can nitpick about whether these were the right nine to start, but these are the players on the roster right now and it's because guys who were here in the winning months are not available.
    • I think you agree Roy. The injuries are one thing, but combining them with the continual influx of rookies/ near-rookies - (as promising as they may be) creates instability.  Holliday, Cowser, Mayo, Norby, Kjerstad, Povich, even Stowers.  The past two years: Rutschman and Henderson. One rookie, a solid unremarkable, yet reliable core that had been playing together for several years. Maybe Elias needs to answer for this. I’m not buying the injury excuse for position players. The pitching - amazing job for the injury plague (Kimbrel not included). Have to wonder if these injuries have something to do with the training staff don’t you?
