Clubhouse issues?

He answered the question appropriately. It ISNT his job to respond to "not being on the same page". His job is to pitch. And he did his job well tonight. He deserved better.

I didn’t interpret his answer as suggesting there were clubhouse issues.  More like “sorry, not my table.”

I mean we literally have 12 out of the opening day 26 hopeful contributors (13 if you include Felix) on the IL. I know every team deals with injuries- we were very fortunate last year on that end. But losing nearly 50% of your roster, many of which are big time contributors, is going to put us at a big time talent deficit.

Westburg/Mounty/Urias/Kjerstad/Mateo instead of Rivera/Soto/Maton/Jimenez/Mayo is a huge dropoff.

Bradish/Means/Wells/Grayson led to a huge dropoff.

Coulombe/Webb instead of Smith/Selby/Irvin/Bowman etc is a huge drop off.

Our saving grace is that 6-7 of these guys could be coming back in the next 2 weeks.

The problem isn’t the guys who are injured. It’s the terrible play from the regulars who are not, and how Hyde is using the players. Yes, we have substandard replacements, and that’s not Hyde’s fault, but the embarrassing play is his responsibility.

Exactly right. The question didn’t really make any sense to begin with and he basically answered with a, “i don’t know. Why are you asking me?”

What does this even mean? You note that we have replacements that aren’t as good, admit that it’s not Hyde’s fault, then blame him for the mistakes that arise from them being substandard players.

How could any of us know if he lost the clubhouse when none of us have clubhouse access?

That’s a fair question, and of course no one can know. But these guys aren’t stupid. They know something is wrong, and it goes beyond the players. We have the replacement level replacements, who are doing their best because they make $6,000 per day and want to keep it up, but they are replacement level for a reason.

But regulars who are playing terrible know they are playing terrible, and they know the other guys are awful and they’re all thinking “oh &#$, not again.” Of course they support each other, but it’s impossible not to be frustrated. And it happens over and over and over again. Every single game bonehead plays abound.

I think they all care, especially when one guy does an outstanding job, and another completely wastes it.

It’s impossible for that to not build up into tremendous frustration, especially when the players may think it’s improper for them to call each other out, so they have to suck it up.

So, you are correct, we have no idea what goes on in there. But it would be ridiculous to think there isn’t any friction that needs to be dealt with. And dealing with it is Hyde’s job.

As an aside, that question just show how stupid most baseball reporters are. As @clapdiddy mentioned, what does the question even mean? Kremer’s answer was fine, but a better response would have been” what do you mean by that?”

Just based off of that quote, is there any reason to think some underlying issues are going on. Like I said, maybe not with the clubhouse but maybe the players aren’t happy with the FO?

That goes without saying, the players are smarter than we are and have strong ideas about what should be done, especially when what IS being done is failing so badly.

Whatever the question was, he says he's not answering it and it's a question for the front office. I don't see how that means or implies anything negative. Maybe there is something going on but that quote is not evidence.

Although I think there are serious problems, I agree with you completely. Kremer’s answer was exactly what it should have been. The question itself was stupid and leading. They need better writers.

The main reason this season has been a disappointment is because of my expectations.

On / 12 they are 1.5 games out of first place and the number 1 WC. That's not necessarily what I would call failing badly.

Why do folks always have to cry about payroll?

The O's had the top farm in the game, they shouldn't have to resort to the depths they have to find guys that can stand on second base with a glove on their hand.

Part of building a team is building depth.  The O's have traded a lot of that position player depth to fill the holes in their pitching staff generated by their draft strategy.

You are correct. The draft strategy is bad. It might have been defensible, but it isn’t now, and yet, even in the ‘24 draft, Elias didn’t change, and his top draft pick was a guy who does everything except hit…which is the most important thing.

The embarrassing play FROM THE REGULARS. The subs are subs, and will be gone soon. When superstars play like crap, and they are definitely playing like crap, and they themselves know it, something is going on, and the manager is the most likely guy to deal with whatever is wrong.

One example of his over-reliance on L/R is how he did and does platoon guys like Westburg, Mayo, and Urias. They all hit RH pitching better than LH but he was very stubborn on making them part of a platoon situation. The results have been good this year for PH but I’m more interested in process than results with a SSS.

Platooning Westburg????   He played in 101 of 109 games before getting hurt.   He was never platooned, unless your definition of platooning is giving a guy an occasional day off in the long grind of a season.

Platooning Mayo?   He has 10 starts.   6 vs RHP, 4 vs LHP.

Absolute nonsense.

Also don't forget that just because a player may not show a platoon advantage vs the other side, or even has slight "backwards splits",  often the pitcher does have an extreme platoon disadvantage, so even if the player is platoon neutral it or slightly backwards, could STILL be the correct move to get the bat in against the pitcher who gets hit hard by righties..

    • The splits for the second half definitely do kinda look like that on the surface, but it was more an issue of one awful slump, rather than an overall second half swoon, especially in 2023. In 2023, he really just had a terrible week or so, which unfortunately happened to be the last week of the season. He went 0 for his last 23, dropping his OPS from .855 to .801 in the process. Prior to that dreadful week, he’d posted an .846 OPS in the second half. This past season, of course, it was almost a whole terrible month — starting right around the day Mountcastle went out. From 8/18 to 9/15, he put up a .411 OPS over the span of 80 PAs. Absolutely awful. But sandwiched around that malaise were two good second half stints, with a combined .926 OPS in 130 second half PAs before and after that tailspin.    Anyhow, I don’t think there’s any way they decline that option. The guy is a quality hitter, so even if they do want to move on — which I don’t think they will — he’d have value to somebody at that relatively low price. Especially if they were willing to eat a few bucks to sweeten the return. If they somehow get a bona fide starting RF from outside the organization, then I think maybe they move him. You don’t want him blocking Kjerstad again, but at present, I think it’s reasonable to imagine that they could both find 400-500 PAs.
    • Im not sure what the deal is with Holliday-to-CF truthers, but he was above average by OAA, average by UZR, and slightly below by DRS at 2B, so it feels like we should give him the opportunity to improve there rather than move him to a position he hasn't really played in his career.
    • If that’s the case , then they can trade Bradfield for other options
    • Perez seems like an easy re-up to me. You need arms, they're not all going to be perfect. He's got some strengths.
    • Garcia is getting some pub from different spots.  Could be a major riser.
    • They did guarantee his arbitration years but they didn’t add any years to their control.
    • Tis' the season for over the top, which should end around Opening Day... Sign Bregman, move Westburg back to 2B.  Lose O'Hearn and make Kjerstad the LH platoon at 1B along with Mountcastle.  Holliday quickly transitions to CF (because if Merrill can do it, naturally so can Holliday) and Mullins is in RF along with a RHB 1-year FA stopgap while Mayo learns RF in Norfolk.  Henderson, Rutschman, Cowser no change. If someone brings up the subject of defense, kindly look the other way.
