Hitting coach death watch

Three Run Homer

Though I think the premise of firing the hitting coach(s) in mid September doesn’t make a lot of sense, I though these comments from Edgar Martinez who took over as hitting coach when the Mariners fired Servais a few weeks ago were interesting.

“I don’t care if you have an exit velocity of 120 [mph],” Edgar Martinez said flatly, standing just outside the batting cage before a weekend game here at Busch Stadium. “If you have the wrong swing, you’re gonna hit still for a low average.”

I doubt very much the hitting coaches are the problem here, but sometimes you need to send a message to the guys who are the problem — the players who aren’t hitting. I think subconsciously some of them are using the rash of injuries to their teammates as an excuse for not focusing on the parts of their game that they can control. Maybe firing a coach or two clears the air, puts the fear of God in some people, and helps them regain that focus.

They do have some things to answer for. I do not think Hyde is in trouble, but the hitters have regressed with swing decisions in an effort to be more aggressive. The power numbers are up, on base is down. Strikeouts are skyrocketing. Perhaps that is on each player, or perhaps their philosophy is flawed.

To me, the real question is, is it the coaches, or is this aggression coming from Sig, Mike and Eve?

^^^ just an outstanding post. Thank you.

None of us know what the root cause of the offensive struggles might be. As fans we can guess, but without a detailed understanding of multiple things, it's just a guess.

Firing the hitting coaches seems unlikely given the first half results, (remember them?) but a detailed post mortem of the season seems to be needed to figure out what happened in the second half. I'm certain there will be changes. Whether they are obvious to the average fan (ie. firing the hitting coaches) or not remains to be seen, (or not seen).

You have to determine the cause of the problem before you can solve it.
