Why couldn't Markakis do it? I'm not talking about a common set of circumstances here... but why couldn't the few special talents do both?

The roster flexibility alone would seem to be good reason, even if your pitchers were only average at best.

I believe the Reds have in fact used Micah Owings as a pinch hitter.

Pitchers pitch every 5th day in order to rest their arms between starts. If they were position players they would have to throw the ball and swing the bat. This does not give their arm muscles the rest required.

A couple years into Ruth's career he started playing the outfield in his off-days, still pitching every four (or whatever) days. Don't know why he stopped, but it was probably pretty stressful.

Didn't Owings just hit a game-tying pinch-hit homer last night?
