Angels Close To Acquiring Scott Kazmir

The Angels are close to acquiring Scott Kazmir from the Rays, according to MLB.com's Lyle Spencer. Spencer reports that the Rays are "on the verge" of sending Kazmir west for a pair of prospects, Alexander Torres and Matthew Sweeney.

I think Kazmir would of been a good pick up for the O's. He has been pitching much better as of late. You can't have enough lefty's on your staff. I think we could of given up a couple of minor league prospects for him.

Kazmir hasn't exactly helped them much this season...

He's pitched 3 consecutive Quality Starts back to back to back in his last 3 starts! :)

I mean, Hamels has kind of sucked this year too but I doubt you'll see the Phillies trying to move him. Guys have bad years in this sport and pitchers seem to be even more volatile than hitters.

He does have a big contract.

3 years, $28.5M contract.

I'll agree with you there, but he could still be a very good pitcher. It's only been this year that he has been bad (8-7, 5.92 ERA). I'm just surprised no one has claimed him because of his success in the past 4 years.

Supposedly the Rays want to spend money on different players.

The package looks interesting. Matt Sweeney is a Maryland product who plays 3B and is hitting well in High A ball.

His favorite team was the Orioles and favorite player was Brady Anderson growing up...

Torres also looks like a nice pitching prospect as well, 10-3 with a 2.74 ERA at High A.

It's things like this that makes me question the future of baseball in Tampa. Kazmir is a power lefty who admittedly has had a rough year but his last 3 have been good. They are still in the wild card race and they are trading Kazmir. Makes no sense. I would claim him in a heart beat.

The O's have mentioned a veteran pitcher (hopefully top of the rotation and not an Adam Eaton type) that can help take pressure off the young rotation next year. It seems Kazmir has already cleared waivers unless I am mistaken, but if I was AM this is a move I would make. 2 year contract for 20 mil is what it would work out to plus the remainder of this year. 8 mil 2010 and 12 mil 2011 would not crush the rebuild if it turns into a bad contract for 2 years. He's 25 and has pitched in a world series, a lefty, it makes some sense. Unless the O's believe his struggles are because of something specific that will not improve I think this would be a move that could jump start the fan base and fill in the rotation nicely.

If Tampa would ask for a huge return that would change things and it seems Anaheim is willing to make a solid offer.

    • Starting point has changed.  Given the fact he has approx 1/7th of his season in the books at 1.139, to OPS just .780 for the season, he'd have to drop off to under .730 the rest of the way.  That sort of drop off wouldn't be acceptable to me. I'd like him to OPS .800 the rest of the way for roughly .850 for the season.  The more they use him in a platoon role, the better I think that number might be.
    • Can I ask how you timed it vs the DVR?  Did you use a stopwatch or count click with pause/FF, or something else?
    • I can’t fathom why anyone would want a Tanner Scott return. In 10 innings, he is 0-4 with a 1.78 whip. He was maddening before, and now he’s older. But I wonder if the Red Sox would part with Justin Slaten? He’s been pretty outstanding. Yeah, only 8 innings, but we hired Yohan Ramirez, and he’s been a catastrophe in 10. Yes, I know he’s a rule 5, and the Bosox are in the East. And their pitching is pretty thin, too. But they know they aren’t going anywhere in this division, and they might think getting a good return for a Free Rule 5 guy might be worthwhile.
    • This draft unfolded weirdly.  First with the *nix guys getting taken early and then how no defensive players got taken all draft, and then a bunch of teams reaching for OTs.  I'm pretty happy with how the draft unfolded because I think we got a player that I expected to be gone by the teens or early 20s.  I don't know what we're doing with our OL but hopefully we can maybe trade up from 62 to pick someone up.
    • I have it on dvr and I timed it four times. I got 10.75, 10.80, 10.74, and 10.78.
    • This is exactly what EDC said tonight
    • My guess is more of a safety profile than they preferred. They clearly wanted Wiggins. They ran that pick up fast. And then when you listen to the press conference, the love for the player was obvious.
