2018 18th Round (535) Jake Zebron - RHS - Colonel Richardson HS

Recommended Posts

6' 3 180lbs DOB: 02/04/00

Luke’s Take: Local kid, but a legit HS prospect, not just a flyer. Touches 94 with his FB out of a unique windup that definitely adds some deception. Also has the makings of a solid curveball. Athletic kid with some projection left, multi-sport athlete (QB of football team. NC State commit but his Twitter says pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles, so I think he’s signable.

As a freshman, Zebron teamed with Jaret Bennett — now at Charleston Southern (S.C.) — and Caleb Johnson — playing at Salisbury — to form an outstanding pitching staff for the Colonels. Zebron went 4-0 with a 1.14 earned run average and three complete games. At the plate he batted .255 with 11 RBIs and 17 runs scored.

In his sophomore season, Zebron went 6-1 with a 1.40 ERA and three complete games. He batted .443 with two home runs, 24 RBIs and 27 runs scored. He went 5-2 as a junior with a 1.62 ERA and four complete games, and batted .345 with one homer, 23 RBIs and 20 runs scored.

Zebron is a three-time first team All-Bayside selection, and earned the conference’s top pitcher honor in 2016. He also led Colonel’s football team to its first playoff berth this season since 2004 as starting quarterback and outside linebacker.

“I’m very excited to be able to play ACC baseball,” Zebron said. “It is a blessing.

Zebron, Whitley, and Sandridge left to right. It’s a weird thing, but honestly shirtless photos like this are the best way to determine projectability.

Zebron is definitely the most projectable frame of the 3, he’s an interesting late round pick.

That's amazing that you can project based on a pic like this!  What do you see here?

Well, look at the frames, width of shoulders and hips.

Whitley, is a muscular dude, looks to be in great shape but he has narrow shoulders and waist, there isn’t room for much more muscle on his frame.

Sandridge has a fairly thick frame, but it’s filled out, he could use to improve his body comp a bit, and maybe you could project that, but generally it gets harder, not easier to maintain a low body fat as you get older.

Now Zebron, like Whitley, he’s quite lean. He doesn’t have the present musculature of the other two though, but he appears to have the widest shoulders of the bunch and his hips aren’t narrow either. There is room for him to add 30+ pounds of muscle to that frame.

Is Whitley going to be a pitcher or outfielder?   Seems like he's been struggling at the plate.

Whitley and Jayne, the two late round athletic OF the Orioles selected, were not on the national radar so they weren’t on the showcase circuit and probably rarely saw velocity or quality spin in HS, so extremely raw. Now every pitcher is throwing 90+ with a decent breaking ball. So you’ll have to be patient with them and they are long shots anyway.
