Bryce Harper struggling at AA; 2 for his last 30

I read in the Post that his promotion that skipped Woodbridge was because of the poor field conditions there.

I too heard mention of the field in Potomac. Makes sense plus Harrisburg is a good place for him to spend a season or more learning how to play the game. Great field, good coaching, winning team, nice city. We get Harper for three games starting this Monday. Bowie expects sellouts for all three games.

Good find, B-Terp. Got me to Google this Stewart guy from Prince William County:

Oct. 15, 2010 letter from Nationals Minor League Director. February 2011 passing by Prince William County Board of County Supervisors to designate $70,000 to work with PWC Park Authority and Potomac Nationals ownership:

The Nationals and Prince William County should be ashamed of themselves. I hope they fix this soon.

Hopefully the Nats leave PWC, they fix the stadium and we move AAA to there.

Or we just find another venue and change our Bowie/Frederick/Delmarva/Aberdeen levels to allow AAA at one of those locations.

Looks like he just got his stroke back by hitting 2 doubles off of Britton in the same inning (5th)

You are just the king of SSS aren't you? First 12 at bats for Wieters now 2 at bats for Harper. I guess the next time Nick walks you are going to predict a 1.000 OBP the rest of the season.

Was at the game tonight, and both doubles were roped. One to left center that one hopped the fence and the other was pulled down the right field line. I was impressed with how the ball really jumps off his bat, even the sac fly was hit on the button.

He is a very talented young man and he can only get better. What impressed me the most was the throw from deep left field. After catching a long drive by Mahoney up against the wall he overthrew his cutoff and one bounced the throw to the first baseman as he attempted to double up Hoes at first. One of the longest throws I have ever seen by a minor league player.

The biggest problem would be attendance. I don't think an AAA team would draw at Prince William Stadium. The area is already saturated with sports franchises competing with one another. Norfolk only has the Tides and draw around 6K a night. Bowie draws close to 4K. Would be a nice advantage for the Orioles however the teams must make some form of profit and draw.

Boo! I'm from the Hampton Roads area and the Tides are the only professional team (even though it is AAA) of the big 3 even close to the area. I really think the O's have an untapped market with Norfolk. I'd be very sad to see the O's change AAA affiliates.

Just got home from the Harrisburg vs. Reading game. Harper was 2-4 with the hit that won the game along with the winning run scored. He hit 3 balls really hard during the game with the last one a shot down the line. He hustled the whole play and scored when the catcher missed the throw from Right. The pitcher he hit the ball off the ninth had struck out the side the inning before. Only a total of 9 hits between the teams all game. Was 0-0 going into the ninth. I got some good pictures of him at 1b with Rizzotti from the Phils. Looks like whatever struggles he had at the beginning were not present during tonight's game. Fans booed him after his slide into home during the ninth. Classic.

Bryce Harper is going to be fine. I mean, major leaguers go through horrible slumps. Cal Ripken had some really bad ones and he played through them and made it into the Hall of Fame. If careers were based off of the first 250 at bats in the majors then a lot of good players would have failed. Besides, slumps and being over-matched look the same in the box score. A line drive out is the same as a pop out. Unless someone is watching him play every game it is hard to tell how a player is doing.

I like Machado, but I would trade Machado, Tillman, and Hoes if the Nationals were willing to send Harper our way. Machado might be a good #3 hitter, but Harper is going to destroy some of those big league pitches like Josh Hamilton has done. Harper has the ability to be an MVP.

Machado doesn't?

    • 41 freaking years and here's this guy with the name pickles telling me I should be happy with 91 wins and getting owned in the playoffs again. 😂 😂 I saw a team that looked terrible the second half and probably didn't even deserve that spot the way they were playing .
    • Lol. Here's the funny they know more then you know. Typical Oriole fan who's happy with getting punched in the mouth.
    • I don’t like the wall. I think it’s affecting our hitters. I’ve mentioned before that I think it has totally warped Mountcastle into something he was never really meant to be. The guy came up as a pull-heavy HR hitter, and in his first season-plus (725 PAs), he puts up 38 HRs and a 116 wRC+. Since then, the wRC+ is down to 110, and his approach has totally changed, with his pull numbers plummeting (down from 39% in 2021 to less than 28% this year). He still hits the ball hard, but constantly underachieves his batted ball data — probably because he’s trying to avoid the pull field and hitting balls to the deepest parts of pretty much every other park. Will the same thing happen to Mayo? Maybe he has more pure power, but it’s always going to be a challenge for a RH slugger to survive with that wall. So much harder to do damage.   Beyond that, I think it’s also creating a serious risk of changing our LH hitters’ approaches too. These guys (Henderson, Holliday, Cowser, 2/3 of Adley) have come up with a reputation for being able to drive the ball to all fields. But how long does that continue when they just can’t hit it out to the opposite field? Our LH hitters had a combined 44 wRC+ at OPACY, and only one HR. They had the 3rd most balls hit to LF at home by LHHs, but the lowest wRC+ of any team on those balls (for the second straight year). The Royals, ironically enough, were the only team that was lower than a 70 wRC+ — that’s how much worse our lefties fared going oppo (at OPACY) than everyone else’s. By player: Gunnar Henderson: 112 wRC+ / .160 ISO (51 PAs) Adley Rutschman: 10 wRC+ / .026 ISO (38 PAs) Anthony Santander: 14 wRC+ / .095 ISO (43 PAs) Colton Cowser: 58 wRC+ / .057 ISO (36 PAs) Ryan O’Hearn: 47 wRC+ / .091 ISO (55 PAs) Cedric Mullins: 23 wRC+ / .100 ISO (41 PAs) Jackson Holliday: -72 wRC+ / .000 ISO (16 PAs)   On the road, they had a combined 126 wRC+ (with 9 HRs) going to left field, so it’s not like they’re bad at it. It’s just Death Valley out there in LF for them at OPACY.  How long will it be until these LH guys just start going full pull-happy? Essentially, the opposite of what’s happened with Mountcastle. When (a) your team’s philosophy is to focus on doing damage and (b) you can’t DO damage to the opposite field — the rational endpoint is just to try to pull everything. I don’t think that’s a good outcome. I think it makes them much worse hitters in the other 81 games, and I think it’s a terrible waste of a bunch of really talented hitters with all-field abilities.
    • Which core players beside Adley Rutschman struggled?
    • The entire commentary on Hyde and the team seems odd but have to admit there does seem to be something off.   Team seemed adrift for most of the 2nd half.  A very talented team went off the rails midway through the season mostly due to core players struggling and rookies not performing or filling in adequately for a few injured starters.    None of the position player trade line acquisitions performed that well.     Hyde seemed in over his head or at a loss on how to correct things, but he must have convinced Elias that he has a plan to fix things.  Curious to see what happens with the coaching staff.
