2013 Norfolk Tides

Jason Pirdie and I have never been so excited to see a minor league baseball team in action. Not a player in particular. But I want to see them make mincemeat of the International League.

I'd put our Norfolk Tides team up against any team in the bigs. Most talented team I've ever been on. Big league caliber players up and down

Is this the new moneyball? Gather the guys that have the pedigree, track record, potential, whatever you want to call it, and create the best depth you can. It's pretty interesting. I've never heard this type of approach to building a team. Maybe it's just what you do when your minors are pretty bare, but maybe it's something we will see this team keep doing for some time.

I wonder if we will see this approach emulated by other teams.

Would be funny to see bidding wars on folks like Pirdie.

Right. Little mini battles of 100,000 or 200,000. It would probably mean a ton to those guys and their young families. I know we paid good on Pearce, but have we consistently done that to some of the other guys? Valencia, Ishikawa, Robinson, and the others? Seems like a nice investment.

Wouldn't having a talented AAA squad decrease a player like Pridie's chances of being called up though? Like, if the O's need an outfielder, they'd have guys like Dickerson, Jackson ahead of him and Hoes and Avery catching up behind. A good problem for the O's to have, big problem for problem for Pridie to have.

Yes and no I think, if Pridie gets hot and we need an OF who can cover some ground and Dickerson is still limping with a busted ankle I could seem him getting called up. Just basing reasoning on last years logic, whoever seemed to be doing well for a stint was called up in a time of need (Lew Ford is a perfect example). Plus, you dont really have to worry about losing Pridie on waivers since if someone claims him we still have Dickerson, Avery, Hoes, and even Ford who can cover CF in a pinch if necessary.

Per Roch, "The Orioles will be announcing their affiliate rosters within the next few days, and I'm curious how Norfolk will be able to find room for all those players. Maybe the International League has approved 45-man rosters."

I have a feeling we will be seeing a lot of paper moves.

My guess is that the position players will look something like this...

C - Luis Exposito

1B - Travis Ishikawa

2B - Yamaico Navarro

SS - Jonathan Schoop

3B - Danny Valencia

OF - Trayvon Robinson

OF - Chris Dickerson

OF - Lew Ford

DH - Conor Jackson

C - Luis Martinez/Chris Robinson

U - Ruzz Canzler

OF - Jason Pridie

That doesn't even create spots for the young, "prospect" players like Avery and Hoes. I would've had Niuman Romero as the back-up middle infielder, but Roch says he's headed to Bowie to provide good defense for our young pitchers.

Hoes should be playing every day at Norfolk with the veterans each getting one day off when he starts. Avery will most likely go back to Bowie.

    • I live in the Atlanta area.  In May 2022 the choice was thought to be Druw (I apologize for the earlier missspelling).  I decided to go see Wesleyan's first round playoff game to see him.  None other than Mike Elias was there as well.  Druw's first AB was an absolute rope of a HR.  Nothing from that doubleheader suggested Druw was anything but a stud.  Then the draft rolls around and the Birds take Jackson. My brother's son played on a little league team coached by the brother of the Wesleyan head coach, who informed his brother that Andruw told Elias that Druw would not sign with the O's if they drafted him but would honor his commitment to attend Vanderbilt.  I have confirmed this with several other sources.  So Elias had no choice but to take Holliday.  I don't think any O's fan is complaining!  I'm simply surprised this story has never been brought out.
    • Caught a couple of Mac Horvath AB last night and he crushed it both times.  He pulled a line drive single and then went oppo for a homer.  I noticed something different.  He’s employed a hitch/timing mechanism where he drops his hands down almost to his waist before he starts his swing.  Before he had his hands in the same start position up by his neck and started the swing right from there.  I went back to a college clip where he started from the same hand position and dropped them slightly before swinging but this looks like something completely new.   It looked like it worked last night.  Fingers crossed but he might be on his way.   The swing looked really good like I remember from college and last year.
    • The Diamondbacks absolutely destroy LHP (.857 OPS, tops in ML) and the Orioles are going to start back-to-back lefties in this series. Don't get me wrong, I would  not change the rotation now with things going well, but I'm going to be very impressed if they get another good start from Means after what Irvin just accomplished. The Orioles are in a much better spot with regard to starter diversity than they were in 2023 and I think that's a very good thing for OPACY.
    • I think the bar is pretty low.  Don’t be as stingy as John Angelos.   Nobody’s expecting him to be Steve Cohen.
    • It's gracious of you to admit it's a matter of personal bias. In just his first of two seasons with the Orioles, Belle provided a lot more offense (37 homers, 117 RBIs, 143 OPS+)  than several of the players you did list combined in their entire Orioles careers, e.g. Clark + Carter + Thome--all of whom, moreover, were much further along "a downward trajectory from age." Belle's first season with the Orioles was basically equivalent to the popular and listed Nelson Cruz's single season (40 HR, 108 RBI, 137 OPS+). I also disagree that Angelos and the Orioles' front office should have known that Belle's days as a feared slugger were over: he had played 143, 158, 161, and 163 games leading into his age 32-years-old 1999 season with the O's. The HR totals during those seasons with the Indians and White Sox were 50, 48, 30, and 49. He played in 161 and 143 games with the Orioles in 1999 and 2000. The degenerative hip condition that ended his career was not diagnosed until the spring of 2021, a half year after his second season with the Orioles. The sight of Belle in spring training nonetheless trying his hardest to run down the first base line on essentially one leg left no doubt in my mind that, as he had expressed to the media, he was absolutely dedicated to honoring the generous contract Angelos had bestowed. He had to be ordered to give up trying to play.
    • Then Who goes to the Pen?
    • Kimbrel was good, no doubt, But I'm with Irvin. Who could have possibly seen the last 4 starts coming? tonight was more of the same, Hope he keeps it up.
