Rivera seemed hittable

Mariano Ricera got the easy save, but he looked pretty hittable to me. His pitches didn't have their usual movement and weren't as well located as usual. Maybe this is widhful thinking on my part, but he may have lost a bit of his stuff.

Yep thought the same thing. Wieters squared one up.

I agree. I watched him pitch in his 2 previous outings before tonight, and he looked very hittable in those games, as well.

Good to hear (missed the last inning), this may be good for us with 17 games against the Yankees to go....but hopefully it won't matter in most of the games.

Wow, how did you manage to watch the game this far? After seeing Manny turn a double play into a triple play all by himself, i couldn't watch anymore. I know the calendar said Friday the 12th, but this game had Friday the 13th written all over it. Glad I bailed out before the end.

Because I didn't give up on Wednesday night, and look what happened. This team doesn't give up on itself, no matter what, and I won't give up on them even when they've frustrated me with some costly, sloppy plays in a game. I've seen them bounce back too many times to give up hope. Three runs in one inning isn't exactly unprecedented.

The first two outs were on line drive ropes. I agree Frobby, the pitches certainly didn't have their normal break.

However, one might simply attribute that to the cold....

Or perhaps the extended use of the cutter is ruining his velocity ....

Interesting article on by Buster Olney about Rivera facing Brady Anderson, Raffy, and Alomar back in the day, if anyone is interested.

It is an insider article, but here's a tidbit:

For the record, Anderson did fine against Rivera: In 22 at-bats, he had six hits, including a couple of doubles, a walk and two strikeouts. Facing Rivera was a comfortable at-bat, explained the former Orioles outfielder, who now serves the team as its vice president of baseball operations.

Anderson recalled that two of his most prolific teammates, Rafael Palmeiro and Roberto Alomar, shared a small bat that they employed only against Rivera. It was 32 inches in length, which made it easier for the hitters to manipulate in the effort to get inside of Rivera's cutter, and the bat was special enough to Alomar and Palmeiro that they bestowed a nickname upon it: Stumpy.

He has indeed been very hittable lately, Franklyn.

    • He is one of my favorite guys on the team. So happy for him. He didn’t moan when he got sent down last year.  He was grinding over the winter to get better and is working with someone on the mental side. Just a great story and now a guy that has forced his way into the rotation.
    • He is a great story. We will have to continue to make room for him because he is the 90% outcome for many behind him.
    • I think Cal's record was able to happen because of a time in O's history when there was no strong manager.  I doubt Cal's streak would have made it to one season if he had played his whole season under Weaver.  Weaver was way ahead of his time on matchups, platoons and resting players.  The  bigger thing about Cal's streak, imo was that it was allowed to happen, where it took on a life of it's own, dwarfing the team.  I'm not diminishing the feat, but there's rarely a player that plays 162 games in a year now.  It's just recognized that people wear down and need rest.  I want to say to that probably the 5 players behind Cal on the streak list did things to basically cheat and prolong their streak especially Gehrig, where he would hit once and then not play the rest of the game.
    • Goes right back to Ted Williams. Get a good pitch to hit and drive it.
    • There was an attempt to debunk this article in the other O'Hearn thread where it's the OP, but in it O'Hearn explains that his efforts to change launch angle and severely limit when he swings underlie the improved performance since coming to the Orioles.
    • I'm thinking that Suarez can be that extra high leverage arm the O's need.  Someone who can take some of the closing pressure off Kimbrel.  No, Hyde, the closer doesn't have to get every save.  I hate when Hyde uses every high leverage arm in a single game then the next game you just have the B squad.
    • Would have been nice for his campaign if he had been allowed to go 8 or even go for the shutout.
