I liked this deal until I saw that Monell was DFAed.

His defense might not be great, but the guy can swing the bat, and I liked knowing he would be able to be called up from Norfolk if needed over the course of this season.

I know Monell's not exactly a player to lose sleep over, but I'm hoping he clears waivers and can be stashed.

But, back to the original deal...I can definitely support trading a guy who's pushing 40 and has his best days far behind him in exchange for a much younger, versatile player who may still have a bit of upside.

Honestly, Caleb Joseph's bat is probably as good if not better than Monell's. Sure, Monell's got some pop, but the only two seasons Monell has batted above .260 in the minors were in in the Cal League and the PCL, two leagues notorious for inflated numbers.
