Woo Hoo, give him a 10/400 contract, get that bust ready for the HOF. In Manny's good month he had a .869 OPS.

There are 41 MLB players with a higher OPS for the season!

Hmmm, I notice you've been pretty quiet on this subject lately after haranguing Manny for 3+ months.

I've watched Orioles baseball for more than 50 years.    I will say unequivocally that Manny is one of the five best players who have ever played for this team.     Three are in the Hall of Fame, and the fourth guy (Mussina) should be.

It'll be a crime if he leaves.

It's gonna hurt me sooo much if I have to watch him play for the NYY or the Dodgers or (insert team with 300m dollars to spend.)  But there's this black cloud over my head that keeps saying next year will be his last year in Orange.

I'm so conflicted when I watch how awesome he's been in the second half thus far.  I'm fully prepared for him to walk in FA, and the thought absolutely kills me.  Not sure how I'd be able to proceed as a fan with that level of ineptitude.

I know this has been said 100,000 times on these message boards, but we need a resolution to this potential disaster this winter.  If he is unwilling to extend,  we HAVE to trade him.

Edit:  of course I'll still be a fan, just disappointed at the ineptitude.

I would take Manny over both Eddie and Mussina.

I'm not ready to say that after 5+ years in the majors.    Careers take funny turns sometimes.   But it won't surprise me if he does surpass a few of our other top 6.

So we are just counting Orioles stats? The claim was "five best players who have played for this team". By that standard I would take Manny over Eddie and Mussina right now because peak Manny is a more valuable player than peak Eddie or peak Mussina.

You need to look at Eddie's numbers Manny so far:

.281 .331 .480 .811 118

 Eddie though age 25

.291 .354 .493 .847 136

Eddie won 3 GG had 3 straight years  of 156 OPS+ followed by a 157. He was ROY and a 7 time AL AS . Manny may get that good but he isn't that level now.

Anyone who played a substantial amount of time, say 5+ years.   No Reggie Jacksons or Roberto Alomars.    But otherwise their whole career counts.

Manny already has two GG (one platinum) playing a premium defensive position. Eddie could have been the best defensive 1B in history and he would not have half the defensive value of a player like Manny. Eddie's offensive numbers are compelling but Manny is a more complete baseball player. Manny already has 3 years of 6.5+ WAR. (Eddie had zero in his first 6 years). I would take Manny if the question is pure baseball talent. Obviously if the question is cumulative impact then you have to go with Eddie.

Well said.     Manny's probably never going to be quite the offensive force Eddie was, but when you add in the glove, he's probably the higher impact player.     But Eddie was elite for a decade, and then solidly above average for another decade.      Not everyone is able to maintain that, no matter how good they were in their early to mid 20's.

But while we're on the subject of comparing the two, I'm enjoying Manny's new-found, Eddie-like propensity for hitting grand slams.

    • I was listening to a Fox Sports Radio broadcast (sorry, can't remember who it was). They put the teams into tiers. The O's were in the top tier along with the Yankees, Dodgers and Phillies. I don't know how long it's been that during the season, someone would have called us top tier. And to think, this is happening with two of our starters out for the year and Bradish and Kremer have spent time on the IL. We are doing this with Hays, Mullins, Urias and Santander starting the season on an extreme slump. We have done this with Mateo starting almost every day (which most people thought would be a horrible thing). We have done this with a bullpen that has been very inconsistent. Imagine if we get some of this stuff fixed and some people back to just playing to their career averages.
    • I'm not sure what we are doing with Vieira. I figured the trade was about the prospect and they had to take him and his salary to make it happen. I expected him to be DFA right away and they would try to send him to the minors to work on him.
    • What would differentiate them?
    • Btw, in the 4 game series against the Jays last year (July 31-Aug. 3rd), it is insane that Mountcastle hit for an .846(!) avg with an OPS of 1.932!
    • Vieira doesn’t have options.
    • May 2024 This month, two non-prospects were obvious choices for MiL Plsyer and Pitcher of the Month: Player of the Month 28-year old Daniel Johnson led the org in SLG, OPS, HR (tie) and RBI.  He hit .350/.439/.725 with 6 HR and 23 RBI pm In the prospect division, I’m going with 19-year old Leandro Arias, .333/.400/.667 with 3 HR and 13 RBI in 16 games.   Honorable mentions to Ellis Cuevas at .992 OPS, Heston Kjerstad .964 with 14 RBI in 16 games after returning to the minors, and Stiven Acevedo at .953.   Pitcher of the Month In between stinking up the major leagues, 27-year old Jonathan Heasley pitched 16 scoreless innings with an 0.813 WHIP. In the prospect division, 21-year old Edgar Portes pitched to an 0.42 ERA in 20.2 innings, with an 0.919 WHIP and 11.8 K/9.   Honorable mentions: Eccel Correa 0.96 ERA in 18.2 IP, and Trey Gibson with a 1.76 ERA, 1.044 WHIP, and 15.3 K/9 in 15.1 IP.
