That's actually the beginning of my video of "The Play."

I know it because Updike wrote a piece about it in SI. My Dad later met Williams the same night he met Warren Spahn. He wanted a bottle of non-alcoholic wine. Dad was waiting tables in those days at the Marriott over in Chantilly.

My college girlfriend was friends with Updike.

That's one of my favorite lines in all of sportswriting. Anyhow, I read the Leigh Monville bio of Ted. I understand a little his rocky relationship with the Boston fans even though I think he would have been a difficult guy to get along with somewhat.

Roy had his way with him.

Definitely one of the most interesting baseball players I've read about. Need to decide who I want to read a bio on next. I've read bios on Ted, Clemente, Mays, Koufax, Mantle, and a long time ago Cal's autbio.

This is why I love the game thread so much. A reliever isn't perfect, and he falls behind a batter and gives up a cheap infield hit... and that is called "imploding".

You know better than that. I didn't say he was, only that it would be a bad time to...i.e., keep it in check and don't implode. Seems to me you were being defensive in your reading. Thinking back to that June game (though, interestingly in that game it was the reverse with the first three batters...Gardner reached, then Britton got two outs), the batter in question potentially being a harbinger of very bad things, the sudden inability to find the zone against him...yeah, gives one a bit of pause there. Do you think I habitually have an axe to grind (we both know those posters are out there, I grant you)?

Either way, if the game threads piss you off that much, cut back. I did for awhile because of the rampant negativity going on at the time...I still don't read every post, and I'm fine with that. Now, if a side effect of that is my looking like a malcontent in a really small sample size because I don't post as much as I used to, oh well. The referenced post was a by-product of concern generated from reliving bad memories, not negativity. Calling me out like that...you're better than that, and I'm better than what you implied.

    • Mayo coming back from injury could have his debut in Baltimore delayed.
    • Wasn't a huge fan of his swing for that last out today but coming in to pinch hit with 2 outs isn't easy.
    • Interpreting Malike's comment that way is theoretically possible, but I didn't take it that way--didn't feel that shade was being thrown on me at all. But thanks for the concern.
    • People are being a bit ridiculous with the holier than thou takes criticizing a little humor. I am not saying what happened couldn’t cause a significant concussion, but it would be a bit of a fluke if it did. Mullins barely hit him with the bat and he had a helmet on. The fact that it was in the back of the head did make him more vulnerable, but this wasn’t the type of thing you see and think he was lucky to be alive.  Guys have probably hit their heads harder on the top of the dugout or on the fence making catches.  And note this comes from someone whose son has suffered severe concussions and who is well aware of the dangers associated with them. In short, people need to lighten up a bit on guys like Roy.  It was a little gallows humor.
    • Yeah, you read that wrong. LA2 is one of my favorite posters here and he knows it. No harm, no foul. If you aren't familiar with the game threads, it doesn't matter what the team is doing, people complain about it and people did make that same joke in the game thread long before Roy said it here. Game thread in summary - when the O's are not doing well, it's insufferable, when they are doing well, it's mildly less insufferable. There, that wasn't hard. I'd appreciate it if you didn't assume I'm throwing shade at people. I'll leave that up to you to do, you're really good at it.
    • Comp a. Like Gunnar, and beavers…
    • Wasn't Westburg a 2nd round draft pick?  It's a little early to judge last year's draft.
