Is this a fair deal for the O's AND Cubs?

And I can't fault you for that. I'm just saying that it is much more possible that we could regret that trade in a couple years than that we'd regret either of the other two trades. If Cedeno's ML OPS ends up in the low 600s as it has been so far, Fontenot does as expected (730-760 OPS), Murton ends up being a somewhat better, cheaper version of pre-2007 Jay Payton (rakes lefties, not good enough to play every day), and Gallagher ends up as a #5, we won't really yield much of anything from this trade because these results are easily findable w/o trading some like Brian Roberts. If Gallagher ends up as a strong #3 or decent #2, we win easily. Same if Cedeno suddenly figures out how to produce his MiL numbers in the majors.

If we do this sort of deal, I won't complain. I'm just saying I'd rather trade Roberts for less players with a higher ceiling and better chance of reaching that ceiling EVEN if they're farther away from the majors. The fact that the Cubs seem so willing to trade some of these guys really makes me wonder.

Now, if Roberts were to keep playing at this level AND resign here in two years, there is no way we could lose on this trade since the next two years mean very little. :P

I don't disagree with you. There is also the possibility that Cedeno ends up being a .750-.800 OPS SS. Fontenot ends up being an average 2B. Murton is a .820-.850 OF/DH and Gallagher is a #3.;)

Or more likely is something in between.

I think that's what MacPhail essentially said when he said he didn't see how trading Roberts would improve us in 08, which implies Cedeno and Murton might not be the players we're looking for.

However, I remember that the Padres were reported having interest in Murton. Any chance we could flip Murton (and more) for the Padre's Matt Antonelli who could be the kind of player we might like as a Roberts replacement? That would give us Cedeno at SS (although I'm not as high on him as some) and Antonelli on 2nd.

My gut feeling is that he is asking for Pie and will settle for Colvin. The only problem is that the Cubs might not want to part with either. The more I look at Colvin the more I like him better than Pie.

I think you are exactly right. Hold on for the ride folks, I think Andy is gonna drive another hard bargain. I will be surprised if the O's trade Roberts to the Cubs without one of Pie/Colvin in the deal. And I will also bet that it will have at least 2 more players coming back with one of them. Just don't think it will happen real quick. Just a hunch.;)

    • Did we ? You can’t possibly know that. Apparently, Elias got a player he thought he could fix.  Sorry but I just don’t think Rogers is as good as Irvin with his diminished stuff. I think he’s essentially a throw away. It would be wise to extend Eflin now while we still can. That way the resources used to get him can actually provide some long term value. Dominguez was an ok pickup…I don’t hate the deal. Problem is we needed a closer and he’s isn’t that. Thankfully Bautista is returning and will push him down the depth chart a slot or two. Soto ….Agreed, you bring him back if you can’t find a better option. I expect them to keep him. Otherwise, giving up Seth Johnson with our minors pitching quality shortage looks like a bad decision  Eloy didn’t cost much …. My general thought is pick ups like him didn’t matter beyond how you grade those acquisitions on a team that “Really Wanted to Win”. I question this because none of the guys that we picked up where having good seasons elsewhere. My thoughts are the same for Rivera …. He was a 563 OPS in Miami but got hot here and was a .948 here. His career OPS is .676 so his stint here is probably not repeatable. His projected arb number is 1.4 million so they likely keep him around as a piece and he’s young enough that maybe the change in scenery caused the light to come on.   By the way … here’s a piece from Roch about sone of these guys.   https://www.masnsports.com/blog/taking-another-look-at-orioles-roster-decisions
    • This has to count as one of the, if not the, biggest choke in ALCS history. Up 5-3 with two outs and no one on in the ninth, after you came back from 1-3 in the eight, with a chance to put a lock on the series.
    • Reverse jinx works again! 😆 🥳
    • Clay Holmes' agent could have used the season ending a good couple months ago. It was nice seeing a chink in Luke Weaver's armor.    Gunnar Henderson v. Anthony Volpe is kind of a centerpiece of Mike Elias mostly out-General Managing Brian Cashman the last half decade, but Luke Weaver v. Craig Kimbrel is not a good chapter and flipping those two guys might have changed the 2024 division.
    • I have all sorts of credit cards that charge interest because they provide me with tens of thousands of dollars in free interest. That said, I never pay interest, because I always pay off the balance each month.
    • My friend and I each had flex plans. Him $2500 and me $1300. Neither of us renewed. Are schedules are too difficult to commit to a set plan and the lack of perks for the lower-tier set plans and flex plans make it not worth letting the Os earn the float on our money.
    • I was going to post Ride the Lighting from Metallica but decided not to. I now regret that decision.
