This is a negotiation between the O's and Parmelee. Several things could happen if Rosenthal is right.

1) The O's could offer him more money to stay. A 550K salary is not out of line for what he is doing in the minors. But Parmelee would have to agree to stay on a minor league contract maybe with a guaranteed call up in September if not before. He may or may not go for something like this.

2) They could call him up and DFA one of lefties Snider or Lough to make 25 man roster space. I don't see the O's DFAing Lough at this point because they need him for a late inning defensive replacement. Snider had a surge in the 2nd half last year and the O's may not be ready to lose him just yet. I think the O's would rather wait on this move if possible.

3) Do a roster manipulation that puts him on the 40 man roster. Normally this would mean he has to go on the 25 man roster. But we have seen in the past a special "gentleman's agreement" waiver where other GMs agree to not claim him. We saw it last year with Santana. If this was used someone would have to come off the 40 man roster. Schoop to the 60 day DL would work for now.

4) Let him go through trade or release. I don't think the O's want to do this.

I could see the O's trying to pull off #3 if #1 does not work.

What do you think?

Down on the farm, Triple-A Norfolk's Chris Parmelee has extended the opt-out date in his contract. He's staying in the organization, according to executive vice president Dan Duquette, who addressed the subject last night on 105.7 The Fan.

Parmelee began last night batting .324/.394/.439 with 11 doubles, three home runs and 26 RBIs in 46 games.

"Chris Parmelee is going to stay with us," Duquette said. "He's having a good year, he likes the organization and we keep looking for an opportunity for him to come up and help the big league club. I'm sure we'll find one here pretty soon. But he's having a good year at Triple-A.

"He has real solid on-base capabilities. He's playing good in the outfield, good at first base, and he's doing a good job for them. And he's going to stay with us."

Norfolk outfielder/first baseman Chris Parmelee is believed to have reached the latest opt-out date on his contract today. He already agreed to extend it once, and the Orioles must decide what they're doing with him.

There's been talk within the organization of selecting his contract, though making room for him is complicated. To add a left-handed hitting outfielder, do the Orioles need to remove a left-handed hitting outfielder?

After watching this guy bat in person, I think he can help us. He is a major league hitter, great batting eye.

Problem is, where to play him. Davis would need to play some RF.

I don't know enough about his defense. -1.7 dWAR over 900 MLB ABs. We already have a lefty DH in Paredes. I think Paredes has probably hit enough to stay for now. I like the suggestion of Davis in RF if Parmelee can play a decent 1B. Then put Lough in LF, and shade AJ toward RF. We would still have a lot of ground covered out there.

vs. RHP:

1B Parmelee

LF Lough

RF Davis/Reimold

DH Paredes

vs. LHP

1B Davis

LF Pearce

RF Reimold

DH Young

Parmelee and Snider do have fairly even career splits, so you could think about getting rid of Delmon Young, and letting Parmelee play vs lefties. It's not like Delmon is hitting anybody these days, nor contributing defensively.

vs RHP:

1B Parmelee

LF Lough

RF Davis/Snider

DH Paredes/Davis

vs LHP:

1B Davis

LF Pearce

RF Reimold

DH Parmelee

I would like to see Reimold play everyday until he proves he can not.

Rosenthal says Tampa might've interested if he opts-out.

Honestly, I think he might. He can rake.

If he can really rake then why does he have a MLB OPS of .709 in 812 PAs? I really do hope that Parmelee can contribute, but I think he's another role player who could do Delmon's job, but I don't see a lot of rational behind promoting him to lose Delmon. He does have some pretty favorable home/road splits from his time in Minnesota, but even taking that into account I think he's a .700-something OPS corner outfielder with maybe okay defense. That's Delmon, or Reimold, and they're already here.

Hard to argue with anything you said there.

I wouldn't be shocked if someone came up limp if he pushes the envelope. I think some would argue Parmalee over Young. I think you could argue both sides there but neither decisively.

I just don't want to lose him and he might provide a spark.

I'd argue that 900 PA spread over 4 years isn't much to go on. Yes he is 27 in AAA but that isn't enough reason to let him walk IMO. He's had a good OBP and fairly low SO rate consistently in the MiL. Even if he is just another Delmon or Reimold he's still younger and cheaper than both.

    • I'm a big fan.  It doesn't mean I have sources in the clubhouse. Do we have any idea who her sources are?  Does she have any kind of track record of having reliable sources?
    • I don't know who this woman is and I don't do Twitter. And this is what I touched on in the other thread: I don't know what the best path forward is b/c I don't know exactly what the problem is. I don't think Hyde needs to go, but if this is true- and I have no idea if it is or not- he should be gone. The talk of veteran leaders brings questions.  What was insufficient of the leadership of Satandaner, Mullins, Burnes, and Kimbrel?
    • Sig for me is notably rigorous trying to combat this.    I feel pretty sure he had a say in crafting his very geeky title, a reflection of his personal brand. We'll see how it goes here if it becomes recommending Adam Frazier and Kyle Gibson as correct for the roster once again.
    • Again, I'm not sure what the point of contention is. They won 91 games and lost in the Wildcard round.  That puts them smack in the middle of what I forecast as their most likely outcome, though I did hope for more playoff success.  I'm not sure how that is proof I misevaluated anything. Further, again, lecturing me about the importance of depth, when I'm one of the biggest hoarders on this board, and you're one of the biggest opposite of that, is ironic to say the least.
    • Aaron Judge whined about it so I’m a fan.  The older I get, the more I think people just exist to look for confirmation biases. In all avenues of life. Paul Simon wrote “a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest.” I’m sure if we beat the Royals and advanced and Walltimore robbed three or four homers from the Royals, we’d be extolling its virtues and how great it is.    But that didn’t happen. If anything, there were a couple instances where, if anything, it worked against us.    So here we are.
    • I mean I wouldn’t be concerned about her opinions on which FA to sign or which players are best. But, she’s definitely a big fan and is just passing off info given to her. If it didn’t track into some other things that make sense, I wouldn’t pay it much mind. Of course, someone with an agenda could’ve just told her those things to spread rumors. Maybe Rick Dempsey haha.
    • Do you think any team is too stupid to account for home park dimensions when evaluating pitchers?
