Seems like the team currently lacks an identity. More talent than the record shows, but tough to see them righting the ship anytime soon. Looks like they are in utter disarray, and front office has to be wondering whether they ned to completely rebuild with a new core.

The acquistions made for the pitching staff were questionable but defendable. But the truly moronic thing was to extend Porcello and Miley when there wasn't a need too.

It really does seem to be their professional acquisitions. Somehow their professional scouting department (obviously I'm being a little bit hyperbolic here) needs to be able to identify poison. They bring in these these free agents at premium (ie overpaid) prices which don't fit together at all.

Their pipeline is stocked. They need to take on the Tampa Bay model for a few years and give their system a chance to work rather than poisoning the ML team with these overpaid misfits.

But far be it from me to make constructive suggestions to the Sux. You just keep on doin' what you're doin' guys.

I don't know anything about their clubhouse; just on-field they look disjointed. The young talent is impressive; the FIP for the starters is like a run better than ERA across the board, so the easy conclusion is the defense is doing some damage. Wonder if they need to reexamine their proprietary defensive metrics, since they've publicly stated (when asked about signing certain players) that they "have their own defensive models and they point to that player likely to perform very well in Fenway."

The best thing for O's fans would be to hope Boston continues to trade prospects for MLB talent that will get injured or see their performance decline over time.

I guess these deals can look different at various points throughout their life. I wouldn't call it a success were he dominating right now, so I would feel a bit hypocritical slamming it as a bust so early in the game. I believe the Porcello deal was more about locking in 2015 pricing, but who knows how it turns out.

But he was already signed for 2015. $12M I believe.

Right; it would be a preemptive move w/r/t this upcoming FA class raising prices across the board again. Not saying that's the right move, but if it is the logic I can wrap my head around that reasoning.

Why do you pay a guy 84 million dollars and then fundmantally try and change him?

i don't know what you are talking about.

4 seam/cutter pct up 25%. 2 seam down 10 % (off career). He's become a flyball pitcher instead of a GB pitcher. I guess he actually started doing this last year though (with better results). It's just gotten worse this year (with bad results).

I think he's referring to the fact that Porcello is now throwing a lot of four-seamers.

The Red Sox really are a dysfunctional mess. HanRam really needs to be a DH, but Big Fatty is there, hitting poorly, and they really can't bench him yet. Panda's weight has caught up with him both offensively and defensively. Swihart was rushed up a year too soon thanks to an injury to their presumptive starting catcher Vazquez. Betts has been surprisingly disappointing (just as Jackie Bradley, Jr. was last year). Napoli looks done, and Victorino can't get on the field.

And that's just the offense. The pitching staff has the worst ERA in the league!

To the good: Pedroia is still a very good player. Bogaerts is developing nicely and has an all-star ceiling IMO. EdRod looks like a stud, and the Sox have some other good pitchers knocking on the door. Betts and Swihart have some talent, if the Sox can be patient with them. Brock Holt has become a pretty solid player.

The Sox have Napoli ($16 mm) and Victorino ($13 mm) coming off the books this winter. Also Ortiz ($16 mm), if they have the guts to cut him loose. So, they have som e money to play with. They could rebound pretty quickly, even though they'll be ruing the Ramirez, Sandoval and Porcello contracts for years to come.

When the players start verbally attacking the manager during the game, it shows me that he lost his team.

Typically, it wont be long as we will see that he is fired. But, its more of a GM mistake in creating the mess, IMO.

Frobby,

I bow to you, and cursed to myself, when I saw Ortiz launched that dang ball over the outfield wall.

Even old hitters like Ortiz, can manage to get lucky, and should still be respected.

That was an awful pitch by Roe. And frankly, the way Ortiz was swinging, I didn't like the pitch choice, either. So I'm not going to pat myself on the back too much.

Maybe there's not enough chicken and beer in the clubhouse.

On the opposite side of the fence is the Giant's team.

I was reading that their starting pitcher was with them on the east coast yesterday and didn't want to fly home via first class and miss the game.

He claimed their new plane, he could sleep just fine on it, and no reason to fly home a day early.

    • I'm a big fan.  It doesn't mean I have sources in the clubhouse. Do we have any idea who her sources are?  Does she have any kind of track record of having reliable sources?
    • I don't know who this woman is and I don't do Twitter. And this is what I touched on in the other thread: I don't know what the best path forward is b/c I don't know exactly what the problem is. I don't think Hyde needs to go, but if this is true- and I have no idea if it is or not- he should be gone. The talk of veteran leaders brings questions.  What was insufficient of the leadership of Satandaner, Mullins, Burnes, and Kimbrel?
    • Sig for me is notably rigorous trying to combat this.    I feel pretty sure he had a say in crafting his very geeky title, a reflection of his personal brand. We'll see how it goes here if it becomes recommending Adam Frazier and Kyle Gibson as correct for the roster once again.
    • Again, I'm not sure what the point of contention is. They won 91 games and lost in the Wildcard round.  That puts them smack in the middle of what I forecast as their most likely outcome, though I did hope for more playoff success.  I'm not sure how that is proof I misevaluated anything. Further, again, lecturing me about the importance of depth, when I'm one of the biggest hoarders on this board, and you're one of the biggest opposite of that, is ironic to say the least.
    • Aaron Judge whined about it so I’m a fan.  The older I get, the more I think people just exist to look for confirmation biases. In all avenues of life. Paul Simon wrote “a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest.” I’m sure if we beat the Royals and advanced and Walltimore robbed three or four homers from the Royals, we’d be extolling its virtues and how great it is.    But that didn’t happen. If anything, there were a couple instances where, if anything, it worked against us.    So here we are.
    • I mean I wouldn’t be concerned about her opinions on which FA to sign or which players are best. But, she’s definitely a big fan and is just passing off info given to her. If it didn’t track into some other things that make sense, I wouldn’t pay it much mind. Of course, someone with an agenda could’ve just told her those things to spread rumors. Maybe Rick Dempsey haha.
    • Do you think any team is too stupid to account for home park dimensions when evaluating pitchers?
