Let's imagine that the O's are willing to spend the kind of money it would take to sign one of these guys. Neither will cost a draft pick, so it's just a matter of money and time.

If they were to have an opportunity to sign one, but only one of them, should the O's sign Chris Davis or David Price?

I know this is a fantasy scenario. Problem is that the O's aren't signing either.

I started this thread to annoy you. No other reason at all.

Don't be ridiculous. Annoying?

Doesn't annoy me.. it's just a waste of space. DD has flat out said what's gonna happen this off season.. Price doesn't give us depth in pitching if we sign him. It just eats massive payroll.

He's got it covered.

OK, but then he should have been more specific being that Jones only hit 27 this past season, and/or said "capable of" being 30+ home run sluggers.

Right, Jones is who I meant. I'll revise my statement and just say between the both they are capable of 60+. Pretty good chance anyway. I think we'll be fine in that department is all I'm saying.

Just sign both Price and Davis and be done with it!

Price. The two years Davis had big numbers we didn't make the playoffs. That's how important his numbers are. We can win without him like we did last year.

When we had the bat of Nelson Cruz....

I'd re-sign Davis in a heartbeat. Price can positively influence 1 game per week. Davis can positively influence every game.

Why is this even a thread? It's not based on actual possibility of happening for the following reasons ...

Why he's gonna sign with the Blue Jays.

1) David Price is winning in Toronto.

2) Price wants to stay in Toronto.

3) Toronto has massive amounts of money coming off their payroll from their pitching staff. About $31m (Dickey and Buehrle).

He will get a $150 to $175m deal (or higher) over 6-7 years with the Blue Jays.

Why the Orioles aren't even considering him.

1) Orioles won't sign a 29 year old pitcher to a long term deal.

2) There are other names out there. Names like Doug Fister, Yovani Gallardo, Mike Leake, Mat Latos, Jeff Samardzija, Jordan Zimmerman.. just to name a few.

3) Orioles are looking for one/two spots to fill and depth. Can't add depth carrying a $25m plus pitcher. But you can carry depth with signing one or two of those I mention.

4) Gausman will be a starter full time in 2016. Basically we have Ubaldo, Tillman, Gonzo and Gausman. So the issue is actually getting a lefty to fill Chen's spot if we don't sign him.

5) Price isn't a lefty ... only left out there that's possible right now is Chen. Kazmir is staying in Houston.

So lets look at some facts before we do Davis or Price thing.. you need to look at roster needs, not your fantasy league draft list. Davis is priority as this FA season is filled with RH starting pitchers. Orioles need a lefty first.

What David Price have you been watching for the last 7 years? The one I've been watching most certainly is a lefty.

Should say ... our lefty (instead of a lefty).

No, as I said ... (since I don't have edit function) ... it's suppose to say, Price isn't our lefty ... meaning there are only two guys out there ... Chen and Kazmir (which he will stay in Houston) that actually fits what the Orioles want.

Something is certainly a waste of space. Keep making really authoritative statements while screwing up such difficult facts as whether Price is a lefty. And no, I didn't buy your excuse. "Our lefty" doesn't work in the context of the original sentence, since you also mentioned Kazmir as a lefty who wasn't moving. You're fast rising the ranks as my least favorite read here.

As to the original question, Price would be the choice of the two for the same contract and it isn't close. I wouldn't go after Price though if all choices are available.

"I made a mistake" is a simple assertion, hardly humbling ...... but some people cannot bring themselves to say it.

You're well aware that there a million ways to win. You could win with absolutely no shortstop at all, plugging in a lifelong centerfielder weeks before the playoffs like the 1967 Tigers did. Some approaches have more likelihood of success than others. Obviously Davis' failures weren't enough to keep the Orioles out of the playoffs in '14, and his big year in '13 wasn't enough to push them into October. But the idea that a 50-homer slugger has little or no impact on a team's successes or failures is, well... counter-intuitive at best.

The impact of a top starter can be as much or more than the impact of a regular position player. David Price faced 888 batters this year, while Chris Davis had 670 plate appearances. Even including defensive responsibilities Price had a bigger impact on his teams than did Davis.

    • Good point, no other metropolitan area has more than one team.
    • Could it be that they allowed the Gnats to reside within 30 minutes of their home. Effectively cutting their market in half?
    • Got my all-time low rarity score on today's game - 6.
    • 41 freaking years and here's this guy with the name pickles telling me I should be happy with 91 wins and getting owned in the playoffs again. 😂 😂 I saw a team that looked terrible the second half and probably didn't even deserve that spot the way they were playing .
    • Lol. Here's the funny they know more then you know. Typical Oriole fan who's happy with getting punched in the mouth.
    • I don’t like the wall. I think it’s affecting our hitters. I’ve mentioned before that I think it has totally warped Mountcastle into something he was never really meant to be. The guy came up as a pull-heavy HR hitter, and in his first season-plus (725 PAs), he puts up 38 HRs and a 116 wRC+. Since then, the wRC+ is down to 110, and his approach has totally changed, with his pull numbers plummeting (down from 39% in 2021 to less than 28% this year). He still hits the ball hard, but constantly underachieves his batted ball data — probably because he’s trying to avoid the pull field and hitting balls to the deepest parts of pretty much every other park. Will the same thing happen to Mayo? Maybe he has more pure power, but it’s always going to be a challenge for a RH slugger to survive with that wall. So much harder to do damage.   Beyond that, I think it’s also creating a serious risk of changing our LH hitters’ approaches too. These guys (Henderson, Holliday, Cowser, 2/3 of Adley) have come up with a reputation for being able to drive the ball to all fields. But how long does that continue when they just can’t hit it out to the opposite field? Our LH hitters had a combined 44 wRC+ at OPACY, and only one HR. They had the 3rd most balls hit to LF at home by LHHs, but the lowest wRC+ of any team on those balls (for the second straight year). The Royals, ironically enough, were the only team that was lower than a 70 wRC+ — that’s how much worse our lefties fared going oppo (at OPACY) than everyone else’s. By player: Gunnar Henderson: 112 wRC+ / .160 ISO (51 PAs) Adley Rutschman: 10 wRC+ / .026 ISO (38 PAs) Anthony Santander: 14 wRC+ / .095 ISO (43 PAs) Colton Cowser: 58 wRC+ / .057 ISO (36 PAs) Ryan O’Hearn: 47 wRC+ / .091 ISO (55 PAs) Cedric Mullins: 23 wRC+ / .100 ISO (41 PAs) Jackson Holliday: -72 wRC+ / .000 ISO (16 PAs)   On the road, they had a combined 126 wRC+ (with 9 HRs) going to left field, so it’s not like they’re bad at it. It’s just Death Valley out there in LF for them at OPACY.  How long will it be until these LH guys just start going full pull-happy? Essentially, the opposite of what’s happened with Mountcastle. When (a) your team’s philosophy is to focus on doing damage and (b) you can’t DO damage to the opposite field — the rational endpoint is just to try to pull everything. I don’t think that’s a good outcome. I think it makes them much worse hitters in the other 81 games, and I think it’s a terrible waste of a bunch of really talented hitters with all-field abilities.
