Watching Chen Pitch for the Marlins Tonight . . . .

It was a pleasure to watch him for four years. He is making the market rate for a pitcher of his ability. We paid him about a quarter of that. I wish we could find some other pitchers who could give us the value we got out of Chen and Gonzo at very little cost. Those deals don't come along very often.

Thats for sure. We were fortunate. But those should be nice surprises or bonus pieces rather than a staple of a long term model.

65 pitches thru 5 innings giving up only 1 run so far against the Cubs.

Too much money for him with that contract, but he looks pretty good after watching Wright & Ubaldo, and even Gausman at times.

Would be a shut out if not for Osuna's moronic OF play. Baez just made an unbelievable play throwing from a lying down position to get an out. Overturned on replay, but don't let Manny see it, it might give him ideas.

What's with Orioles fans on this board pining for mediocre ex-Orioles players? Chen has a 5.22 ERA and 4.74 FIP this year. Those are abysmal numbers especially for an $80 million pitcher.

People pined for andino when he hit a single against us one time.

I love andino for his Red Sox KO, for what it's worth.

Unless you are a team like the 2001 Mariners or the 1984 Tigers (or the 1969, 1970, and 1971 Orioles), you are going to have some tense times over the course of the 162-game season, including losing streaks, failures by starting pitchers, failures by relief pitchers, failures by the offense, etc.

And when that happens, there is always going to be least a portion of the fan base that will pine for the "good old days", with the perception that if we had only kept so-and-so, we wouldn't be riding this losing streak, or our offense wouldn't be in this slump, etc.

In my rat's ass of an opinion, that kind of thinking/pining is skewed by illusion. It's kind of like when you get a bad-luck break at a crucial time in a game, and you say something like, "You know, how come those types of things always happen to the Orioles?" But the reality is that "those types of things" happen to all teams ...... like against the Padres last night, when Upton's almost home run went foul by inches, which preserved the Orioles 1-run lead at a critical time in the game. Or like the game against the Angels last month when the Orioles' hapless offense was one strike away from being shut out by a score of 1-0, and one swing of the bat by Matt Wieters saved the day, and the game. You can bet your rear-end that when that happened, Angels fans were thinking to themselves, "Why does this s*** always happen to us?"

It just feels like it always happens to your team because you want them to win so badly, and it hurts so much when they lose. But in fact, that is not the reality of the games ...... that is just the perception of the passionate fan who never likes to lose.

Don't forget, also, that most fans of whatever team things always happens to typically only watches that team's games.
