Should the Orioles give Bundy the Sale treatment?

The CWS signed Sale to a five year team friendly deal with two additional team options.  It controlled him for three extra years.  Like Bundy, he was viewed at the time as an injury risk.

Should the Orioles do the same with Bundy at this stage?  Something like 6/45 with two team $15M options.

Is that too risky?  Would Bundy's camp go for that?

There's a significant difference between Sale and Bundy, while Sale is viewed as a health risk with his throwing motion he has been surprisingly healthy over his career. Bundy on the other hand, missed huge chunks of the 2013,2014 and 2015 season due to various injuries until finally getting through 2016 seemingly injury free. That's a lot of money to throw at someone who has neither had a great performance nor history of health. 2017 will be a big show me year for him.

The problem being that if he does have a big year then why would he sign a long term team friendly deal?? It's a risk by the team but as shown with Sale it sometimes works with awesome benefits. And it gives Bundy some security before he's truly proven himself which could potentially entice him to do it.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to try and lock Bundy, Gausman and Schoop up long term.  Just to be a realist it looks like we're going to have a good window to win in 2017 and 2018.  We missed our chances to extend Manny, Tillman, Britton, etc.. for cheap deals.  We can fix that with this next wave of guys.

Too soon.  The Orioles aren't going to offer a contract extension based on the possibility of Bundy approaching his ceiling, and Bundy's people aren't going to want to extend based on his performance thus far.  It seems to me that both sides need at least another full season before they can negotiate an extension in earnest.

Bundy's under control through 2021. What's the hurry. I'd rather see another year of health first.

Same thing probably could have been said about Machado a few years ago.   It is an interesting idea.

They were right not to try and extend him until after his knee surgeries and they are right to wait and see if Bundy has a healthy season. If he does next winter would be a good time.
