Unfortunately, you wont see any DD basher give him, his credit due. They only like to beat him up.

I think it was a good move. Probably the best option on the market. I still think Dan has made some bad moves and failed to build a foundation for winning past his own contract.

Yeah, I'd agree that Castillo is a downgrade from Wieters, but not a big one.  They are comparable players, and it certainly appears that we're getting the less costly one.  The money difference seems greater than the likely production difference, IMO.  Hopefully we use that money for an upgrade elsewhere.

Maybe.

But, DD also likes having wiggle room to make deal in mid season, too.

None of us, really know what the payroll ceiling is.

Best option available, not named MW.

IMO, I still believe its a downgrade, but at this point, nothing to do, but accept the guy into the team and hope it works out.

I'm not sure it's a downgrade, really. Not much of one anyway. Wieters isn't the player he once was. But the fact is that, at least at this point, Wieters is almost certainly looking for a longer term deal (whether he gets that, we'll see). I think it's dangerous to sign a catcher in his 30s who has had Tommy John surgery to a multi-year deal. And, assuming Castillo picks up his option for 2018, you're getting two years of him from millions less than what Wieters cost you last year.

I don't think we care about pitch framing too much.  Homers and CS% are first and foremost.  If Castillo had highly respected pitch framing abilities he wouldn't be on the market and definitely wouldn't be here for 1/6 or 2/13.

Yeah, Caleb can catch for the guys that need every single strike they can get (especially Ubaldo). Castillo can catch the other guys. Buck will make it work. Meanwhile, Castillo will replace most of Wieters' offense and has every incentive to be productive in his first year.

The worst is when batters are clearly getting good hacks at fastballs and just missing, and we'd still make that pitch. Or when it was clear someone didn't have a good fastball, but their change was deadly, and we'd still throw it.

I won't miss the 0-2 calls from behind the plate.

    • Funny thing is, if the O's win, I'm generally so psyched on my way out that I don't even notice all of these annoyances. I'm just happy that the team won. That was my experience a lot this year when the team was doing well. Unfortunately about half of my 13 game season ticket plan was in August and September, plus I got to watch one of the pathetic WC games. You can smooth over a fair bit of fan annoyance with winning, but at the end of the day, someone has to care about the little things and actually invest money to make them better. There's no longer any question about whether the O's will be here to stay. The government and the team are aligned: OPACY and the Orioles are here, and we're going to make the best of what we have, and make it a centerpiece of Baltimore. That's great. But now they have to put their money where their mouths are. Show fans from all walks of life that we are able to reimagine OPACY and the surrounding area in the image of an efficient, clean, 21st century facility, starting with things as basic as infrastructure and plumbing, and ranging as far as parking, public trans, and food at the park. Honestly? I sort-of understood why they weren't investing in anything in the years when (1) the team was bad, and (2) ownership wasn't invested in the team, and (3) the renewal of the lease with the Maryland Stadium Authority was in doubt. The vast majority of points (1), (2) and (3) above are now non-issues, or have been majorly mitigated in the past 2 years. So it's time to make things right. Otherwise why bother with the long-term commitment at all, if you're just going to let the project languish?

    • I still think Soto (Juan, not any of the others) checks off all the boxes here.  Insanely productive, plays hard, can rub opponents the wrong way on the field but is generally liked off of it.
    • We're not a mid-market team. Small market for sure.
    • Things looking bleak for KC. They left 11 runners on base, got a taste of their own medicine, I guess.
