I'm not sure it's a downgrade, really. Not much of one anyway. Wieters isn't the player he once was. But the fact is that, at least at this point, Wieters is almost certainly looking for a longer term deal (whether he gets that, we'll see). I think it's dangerous to sign a catcher in his 30s who has had Tommy John surgery to a multi-year deal. And, assuming Castillo picks up his option for 2018, you're getting two years of him from millions less than what Wieters cost you last year.

He is cheaper.

In his 30s, Isn't he just 30?

I am not sure, there is really that much a of  occurrence of Tommy John in catchers. but thats just my own thoughts.

Sorry to see Matt go, hope he get the multi year deal he's looking for

That'll probably be Atlanta.  Other than Jones you can pretty much close the book on our last "core" of hitters in Baltimore.  Roberts, Markakis and MW.  I guess Reimold could still come back.

Yeah not so much, seemingly. He was smart to accept the QO though. And we will see what he gets this offseason.

And I just learned how to spell wIEters right.  Now we're all going to have to realize how to spell weLington.

Can we at least change the title of the thread to spell his name right.  haha

I won't miss the 0-2 calls from behind the plate.

The day Wieters called for those first pitch fastballs by Matusz to Raul Ibanez was the last day i could take him serious as game caller. It was also the day I started to count down to this day. Nothing against the guy personally, but I think the Orioles are better pitching staff when he's not behind the plate.

But he's 6th best in Catcher ERA and why that stat has a lot of problems, one thing we can agree on, our staff kinda sucks so that's a pretty impressive number honestly.

I'm sad to see Wieters go. We grew up in Goose Creek together. We may have even watched a Charleston Riverdogs game together with Dave Trembley managing. Who knows? I didn't know him. I like to think we played little league together...him and Justin Smoak were probably both inspired that year I hit 20 batters in one game.

Unfortunately, you wont see any DD basher give him, his credit due. They only like to beat him up.

I will give him credit. One of things not mentioned here so far in my reading is that Castillo MASHES lefties. Something this team is sorely lacking.

I like the deal. It is a small upgrade IMO, but the money and terms are right. Dan did well.

I've looked up the stats in the past and for the most part the stats don't bear out my concerns, but it doesn't stop me from that felling when he's behind the plate that he's going to call a stupid pitch in a critical situation. Of course I also know major league scouts who don't think he's a good game caller.

Maybe.

But, DD also likes having wiggle room to make deal in mid season, too.

None of us, really know what the payroll ceiling is.

You did see the names that playoff teams acquired at the break last year right? We got Parra/Miley, the last 2 seasons.

    • Funny thing is, if the O's win, I'm generally so psyched on my way out that I don't even notice all of these annoyances. I'm just happy that the team won. That was my experience a lot this year when the team was doing well. Unfortunately about half of my 13 game season ticket plan was in August and September, plus I got to watch one of the pathetic WC games. You can smooth over a fair bit of fan annoyance with winning, but at the end of the day, someone has to care about the little things and actually invest money to make them better. There's no longer any question about whether the O's will be here to stay. The government and the team are aligned: OPACY and the Orioles are here, and we're going to make the best of what we have, and make it a centerpiece of Baltimore. That's great. But now they have to put their money where their mouths are. Show fans from all walks of life that we are able to reimagine OPACY and the surrounding area in the image of an efficient, clean, 21st century facility, starting with things as basic as infrastructure and plumbing, and ranging as far as parking, public trans, and food at the park. Honestly? I sort-of understood why they weren't investing in anything in the years when (1) the team was bad, and (2) ownership wasn't invested in the team, and (3) the renewal of the lease with the Maryland Stadium Authority was in doubt. The vast majority of points (1), (2) and (3) above are now non-issues, or have been majorly mitigated in the past 2 years. So it's time to make things right. Otherwise why bother with the long-term commitment at all, if you're just going to let the project languish?

    • I still think Soto (Juan, not any of the others) checks off all the boxes here.  Insanely productive, plays hard, can rub opponents the wrong way on the field but is generally liked off of it.
    • We're not a mid-market team. Small market for sure.
    • Things looking bleak for KC. They left 11 runners on base, got a taste of their own medicine, I guess.
