The Orioles Offense

It's funny, when I voiced my concerns about the offense 2 and 3 years ago all of the sabermetrics people along with several others on here bashed me.

Every time the Orioles have made the playoffs since 2012 they have lost b/c the offense has disappeared. Unfortunately, a one dimensional offense is going to produce long droughts and the Orioles do not have the starting pitching that is capable of carrying the team when that happens. This combined with the loss of Britton gives them very little hope to having a winning record this year.

Your arguments have generally been complaining about strikeouts.    That's what people have generally bashed.   You've made some very extreme statements on that particular topic over the years.   And from my own quick research, high strikeout teams don't tend to be noticeably less consistent than low strikeout teams.

The offense is scoring 4.55 runs a game, which is down just slightly from last year's 4.59, but the league average is up from 4.52 to 4.69, so we've gone from slightly above average to solidly below average, despite yesterday's outburst.    With the pitching we have, the offense needs to be on its game.

Yeah, the article that I cited was titled, "The Offense Can Still Carry the Orioles."

A more appropriate title would be, "The Offense is the Orioles' ONLY CHANCE to Win Games."

The Orioles have now hit 30 homers in 17 games in June.   Their OPS is .793 for the month and they're averaging 4.94 runs/game.     However, the run production has been very skewed, as they've scored 3 or fewer ten times, and in the other 7 games scored 15, 10, 9, 8, 7, 7 and 6.   The O's are 1-9 in the games where they scored 3 or fewer, 6-1 in the games where they scored 6 or more.

20 runs in 3 days against Houston, to raise the team average to 4.66 runs/game, passing Tampa for 8th in the league, and .02 below the league average.

The O's have scored 65 runs in 10 games since the all star break, most in the league.

If only they could pitch. :bangwall:

Right now the O's have seven players topping an .800 OPS in July:

Joseph 1.023

Schoop .994

Smith .951

Jones .898

Machado .868

Tejada .820

Trumbo .814

Is this still Manny's breakout month?

He's never going to be a good hitter unless he abandons his ridiculously open stance. He has more moving parts during the pitchers windup than a classic good hitter has till just as the ball hits the impact zone.

Seems to me that Manny had closed his stance up a little over the last few weeks, but has reverted to a more open stance the last few days.
