I've been banging the drum for Smoak recently, but even I have to admit that Tim Beckham should be the choice if he is available. Any time you can pick a player at #4 who could reasonably be regarded as the best overall prospect in the draft, you do it.

My only misgiving is that Beckham might not develop as well as he should in our organization, given our dismal track record with developing position players. Can anyone in this organization teach a young man how to hit?

You may have something here. Both our first round high school bats we've picked in 2006 and 2005 have disappointed. In fact probably all our HS bats that we've picked over the last 10 years have disappointed. Picking a college bat might be the best thing just because our minor league coaching staff is so inadequate at teaching high school hitters how to hit properly.
