Here is another approach if Peter decided to extend Manny and Britton.

This is keeping Manny, Britton, Hardy as backup and Castillo;  Adding Hays, Mullins, and Santander.

 Buck  and Dan will be extended for 3 years this off season as manager.    I 

1B  Davis 23m

2B  Schoop - 8m  = 31m

SS Beckham - 1.3m = 32.3m

3B  Manny - 20m  = 52.3m  Extended 10/300m with an 5m year opt out.  O's make an exception for Manny.

C Joseph - 3M = 55.3m

DH Trumbo - 12.5m = 67.8m

LF  Mancini - .545m = 68.345m

CF  Hays - .545m = 68.89m   O's need the speed.  They need to move Jones out for center where he dives and injuries himself too much.   2018 is the last year of his contract.   

RF Jones - 17m = 85.89m

BC  Castillo - 7m  = 92.89m    He exercises him player option.

OF Mullins - .545m - 94.435   Mullins will provide speed, defensive,  baserunning,  the ability to rest Jones in right and keep the O's from needing to play Hays too much in his rookie year.  He keeps Trumbo out of the outfield. Rickard  optioned to AAA.

UIF  Hardy - 4m  = 98.435 (2m of the 4m is a buyout)

OF Santander- .545m  = 98.98m

SP1 Bundy -  1.8m  =  100.78 

SP2 Gausman - 6m = 106.78   

SP3  ?

SP4  ?

SP5 Tillman  - 1m with 5m in incentives/150k per start =  107.78m

RP1 Britton  15m  122.78m 

RP2 Brach 6m = 128.78m  

RP3 O'Day 9m = 137.78m

RP4 Givens .56m =138.34

RP5 Hart  .55m = 138.89m 

RP6 Castro  .54m = 139.43m

RP7  Bleier .54m = 139.97m

Buyout for Miley .5m

That leaves 25m for two starters. Dan looks for salary dumps.

I would rather have him starting than either Miley or Ubaldo. 13 QS compared to Miley and Ubaldo 5 each.

Agreed.  He'd certainly be an improvement - assuming he doesn't fall off a cliff.  I'd just prefer a longer term improvement and someone who isn't 43 years old.

The discussion wasn't about getting him in August.  It was about getting him next year - hence the 8 mil for 1 year discussion.
