I Cannot Believe The Way This Team Has Folded.

I'm also very disappointed with how the team has played down the stretch.     Basically, the offense went into a slump that the team couldn't afford, just when we were getting into a stretch of playing teams with very good pitching.   And this team has to win with offense on most days.

I'm hoping they play respectably over the final 9 games, so I don't have too sour a taste in my mouth when the season ends.

The Oriole pitching might look better the last nine games. Rays have not hit since the All Star break. Pirates have really been slumping and also not hitting.

For the better part of this season, this team had historically bad starting pitching.

Subsequently, the bullpen was very much overworked, having been asked to do much more than could be reasonably expected.

In addition to the overworked bullpen, that's a lot of pressure on the offense to constantly put up big numbers to even give the team a chance to win many of their games.

Considering all of that, I think that it was incredible that they were somehow 3 games over .500 as late as August 29th (71-68.)

As a rabid Oriole fan, I am disappointed that the Orioles could not expand on the 10-3 spurt that they managed to go on between August 23rd and September 5th to stay in the race for the Wildcard positions ........ but I am hardly shocked about it, for the reasons stated above.

Eh, I never really expected them to get over the hump. The Yankees crushed any faint hopes I had. Beckham and Schoop were hitting out of their minds and we all knew that wasn't sustainable. The pitching is what it is. We're just not a very good team. Winning the TOR series might have been nice, but there is nothing to play for, so it really doesn't matter.

The O's were 1.5 games out of the wild card  on Sept 3rd.    They played 13 of their next 16 vs the Indians, Yankees and Red Sox.   Clearly these three teams are better than the O's.  The Indians were in the middle of winning the most consecutive games in AL history.   The Yankees and Red Sox were/are fighting it out for the division title.

This was a tough place for the O's to be and it showed.

The Indians is one thing, but I did not expect them to get crushed by the Yankees and Red Sox. Two teams they've had pretty good success against.

Looking back on the games with the Yankees and Red Sox  this month and comparing the O's starting staff to theirs,  how many games do you think the O's should have won against them?

I certainly wasn't expecting 2-8.

So they waited until they were in WC contention in September to say the hell with Buck?

Sorry, didn't see this before. No, I'm not saying they said to Hell with Buck. Buck comes in and changes the culture, they start winning (the most games in AL for 5 years) so they believe in the plan. This year, the team really has Buck's stamp on it and Buck's guys's didn't perform and the pitchers that were shipped out (I blame Buck) had some success, while those here (I blame DD) crapped the bed. I think psychologically, being behind regularly so regularly takes a toll and when we got to September Buck's will just wasn't enough to keep them grinding.

It just must be incredibly frustrating for the hitters to see the team down by 5 runs by the 3rd inning about every 3rd game.  They must be thinking "Here we go again".  I know they are professional athletes, but this would get to anyone.  I wonder if there is anything to Trumbo objecting to being pied matching up to when the team nosedived.  If there is, it is just reason #100 to get rid of Trumbo.

Yes but the pies in the face need to stop too. I am not going to say anything about the players. I think how would I feel if I was a player? Play your ass off only to still lose.Must be physically  exhausting to be a professional athlete. I would never want that job.

    • ???. Cowser took more swings against LF than any other LH hitter on the team ( not named  Henderson). He was one of the guys they did not platoon.
    • I think Kevin Seiyltzer was the fall guy for a team that thought they were a championship team.  This guy has overseen more a decade of hitting in Atlanta, has been through developing and helping young batters succeed when the league adjusts.  Most importantly, he has a ring!
    • Glad one poseur AL team is out.  I hope CLE wins and knocks the other one out tomorrow.
    • I honestly think there is very little difference in most the teams that made the playoffs.  The most wins was 98 wins and there was 12 teams with 86 wins or more.  It also seems that many of the teams are on the same page with scouting and analytics now hitting wise.  Years back you had moneyball which the A’s used before anyone else.  Then the Astros and few teams started with analytics and seemed to be ahead of the rest of the league but they have caught up now imo.  Now the move seems to be on launch angle and hitting homers by getting the ball in the air but that seems to be across the league.  Obviously some teams have more money and more talented players but the strategy seems about the same.  The main differences I see is in pitching in the playoffs which is bullpen games and using openers rather then a starter to go 7 innings and carry your team to win now a slight sign of trouble they are taking them out.  With all these short inning guys and pitching them in certain pockets we are seeing very little offense and the hitting with runners in scoring position has been awful.  It all comes down to RISP at bats and getting 1 or 2 big base hits in those situations.  We just haven’t been able to get those hits so far in short series.
    • And we've seen similar with Kjerstad. Kjerstad might be the best pure hitting prospect in the Orioles system of recent years besides Gunnar. I want to see him playing everyday next year is possible none of this sitting him versus LHP more often than not. These prospects need to get their reps and stop treating them like John Lowenstein and Benny Ayala.
    • I don’t see Elias trading off prospects anymore at least top guys.  We have moved a few guys in last year and I expect they try to build that back up.  They should have money to use if they want to add talent.
    • Blah, well Rob Manfred has to be happy along with Fox network. A Yankees-Mets World Series match up is still on the table and the Dodgers as well if they win tomorrow. I knew the Royals would get jettisoned by the Yankees without too much of a fight.
