Coppolella, 38, was one of MLB’s youngest GMs. He took over the job in 2015, after serving as the Braves’ interim general manager, and has built the Braves into one of MLB’s top farm systems. Can the Orioles hire this guy ASAP?

Hmmm.  It looks like he's under investigation for possibly violating the rules on the market for international players.  Doesn't really sound like a PA kinda guy.

The guys being investigated for wrongdoing, quit his job because he was probably going to be fired and/or suspended for a long time (why else would he have quit?), and you want to hire him?  Seriously?  Maybe they can hire Chris Correa as scouting director too.  I'm sure they could work out some sort of teleworking arrangement.

SMDH.

Yeah, that sounds like an Angelos thing to do, hiring a guy who's under investigation by the league.   He loves taking those kinds of risks...

Angelos has no problem annoying MLB when it comes to MASN.

Oh, I doubt PA would be too concerned about annoying MLB.   But there's the risk that MLB suspends Coppolella for some period, or just the risk that he'll be distracted while spending a lot of time defending himself.    And I doubt PA would like the publicity hit.    Besides, the MASN case has a huge financial consequence, so it's worth it to PA to annoy MLB over that, but this just isn't worth it.

Last year, a prominent agent received a phone call from a 770 number. On the other end was John Coppolella, the general manager of the Atlanta Braves. He wanted to talk about one of the agent’s clients. The agent found this particularly curious, not because the Braves liked the player but because he was playing for a different organization and it was August, a full 2½ months before he would hit free agency. Never before had he seen a general manager so blatantly disregard tampering rules.

"As he climbed to the front-facing position in a prominent organization, Coppolella earned scorn from peers by ignoring the be-seen, not-heard industry convention and relying upon friendly media relationships to bolster his public reputation. "

He will never be a GM again. Anywhere.

One involves Drew Waters, a second-round pick this season whom the Braves allegedly offered under-the-table benefits to sign for under the slot value. In interviews with the league, Coppolella and Keith Grunewald, Waters’ agent, denied the allegations, saying that Coppolella’s offer of a car to bridge the difference between the $1.5 million he signed for and the $1.675 million slot value was made in jest, according to sources.

How does Passan get so much info so quickly?

He knows people who know things.

"The Braves’ troubles could extend far deeper, according to sources. The investigation remains open and is expected to look into the signing of top prospect Kevin Maitan, a 17-year-old shortstop who received a $4.25 million bonus last year. If improprieties are discovered with Maitan’s signing, he, too, could be declared a free agent."

Awful news for Braves fans (like me).  It's possible that some of the 17 year old highly regarded international prospects they signed last year (including Kevin Maitan) will become free agents.  Maitan is a freakish talent, but he's a few years away from the majors.

Maybe we can find a job for Rick Pitino also.
