The draft standings updated after Friday's games-- 9/21/18.  
--In the event of a tie at season's end, the Orioles will pick before KC--

1. Orioles 44-109

2. Royals 53-101  /  8.5 GB

The O's have clinched the #1 pick. No further updates required.

Since it's official now that we are getting the # 1 overall pick I did a quick search of recent first round draft picks and how they are coming along.  I was surprised with how many recent # 1's have turned out to be complete busts or are headed that way.  The Astros had the first overall pick three years in a row from 2012 to 2014.  They hit on Carlos Correa in 2012 but completely struck out in 2013 with Mark Appel and 2014 with Brady Aiken (both pitchers).  Appel and Aiken will be lucky to ever be solid big league contributors at this point.  Amazing how well the Astros have done despite those picks. 

Mickey Moniak (CF), who the Phillies took in 2016 could be heading into bust territory as well, really mediocre #'s in his second pro season in A ball.  2015 first overall, Dansby Swanson (SS) isn't a bust by any measurement but if we ended up taking Bobby Witt Jr. and he was putting up a combined sub .700 OPS in his age 23 and 24 seasons in the bigs, I think most on this board would be pretty disappointed over that production. 

The main take away from all this, is that we are just as likely to end up with a Tim Beckham or Dansby Swanson as we are with a Carlos Correa.  Kind of a 50/50 proposition.  It's tough to imagine winning again in the next five or seven years if we don't get a Correa type or two in the organization over the next few seasons, so fingers crossed.

I don’t know. I remember the 2012 draft very well. Correa was ranked about 6 coming into the draft but looking at video he was a pretty solid pick. I view Abrams similar at this point but we still have 8+ months to sort that all out. I don’t see a Harper or a Strasburgh at this point but do see a couple of guys that are solid choices. I’m not too nervous about having number one overall and blowing it.

I’m not going to say Swanson has been fantastic, but a 2.5 rWAR season at age 24 isn’t bad.  JJ Hardy might be a decent comp for Swanson.  If so, that would put him in roughly the top one-third of no. 1 picks.

Sometimes the draft is a crapshoot, but if you trust the guys scouting and picking, then you get whoever you want FIRST. You could be wrong, but you do get your first choice.
