When are teams going to start forbidding their players from sliding head first, beginning at the lowest level of the minors?

So the O's lost a fringe guy, but the Yankees lost Gregorious within the past 48 hours.

Hands are two valuable to be slamming them into catchers shin guards or jamming them into bases.

Much less likely to seriously injure a leg/foot/ankle sliding into a base

Sounds like a case for break-away bases.

From little league on I was taught to never slide head first into home because of the catcher's equipment can easily break fingers. apparently Valera didn't get that coaching or if he did, wasn't able to put it into motion at the right time.

Do not slide head first into home or 1B. But 2B and 3B is fine. Improper technique is a big problem. Years ago--when people stole bases--you did not see this many injuries.
