Poll: Will the O's sign the Mesa brothers?

Old thread, was brought back by this post, sharing a Meoli article about the Orioles international program.

Gaston and the Mesas were viewed as a chance to acquire first round talent for just the money. Like an opportunity to have an extra first rd pick. We can break down their performances one year later, but I’d like to see my team take the opportunity to acquire first round pick talent when they can.

The Cuban defectors are a good chance for us to get international talent because we’re just now getting Kolby Perez set up in the Dominican. I think Gaston and the Mesas were looking for the most money, which we didn’t offer. 

Don’t forget SS Yolbert Sanchez($2.5 million) from Cuba, we were rumored to be interested in him as well. Probably only rumored because we had the most international slot money available.

Agreed, but it's some good schadenfreude when you lose out on the equivalent of a 1/1 pick and he hits like Mark Belanger at 22 in A ball.

He basically didn’t play baseball for three years. I have no stock in the matter, but I’m sure the Marlins would tell you that this year was just about getting him reps. That’s why they sent him to the AFL. 

I’d be pretty happy just to have the younger brother in our system.

That's an exaggeration.  He had almost 200 PAs in 2017-18, and almost 300 in 2016-17.  Then this year he had 503.  He didn't play most of 2018, but that's it.  I'm sure the Marlins are hoping that his .537 OPS, and zero home runs across AA/A and the Fall league is just fine.  Maybe it is.

He is older than Yusniel Diaz.

The Mesas cost the Marlins $5.5 million total. Diaz cost the Dodgers $30 million.
