They also won 4 out of 5 games against the Twins (2-0) and the Nationals (2-1) in that span.

I believe that it remains to be seen whether or not they are a bona-fide playoff contender, largely because of the large hole that they dug themselves into before winning the 15 out of 16 games that they did, and also because of their sub-par bullpen.

Pete Alonso broke a tie with Cody Bellinger for the most home runs before the All Star Break by a National League player with his 26th Round Tripper of the season this afternoon.

Bellinger hit 25 Home Runs prior to the All-Star break in his Rookie season of 2017.

Mark McGwire holds the Major League record from when he swatted 33 Home Runs before the All-Star break in his Rookie season of 1987.

Once again, Pete Alonso again broke a tie with Cody Bellinger for the most home runs by a National League Rookie ........ this time, it was for overall home runs in a season (Bellinger hit 39 HR's for the Dodgers in 2017, Alonso hit his 40th of the season this afternoon for the Mets against the Royals.)

The Mets getting swept by the Cubs will likely be the dagger to their playoff hopes.

They were a long-shot for a playoff berth in the first place, having put themselves in a big hole by going 46-55 in the first 101 games of the season.

Winning 15 out of 16 games put them in the conversation, but they would have had to continue playing excellent baseball for an extended period of time in addition to that great run that they had ........ they probably would have needed to go something like 10-6 over their next 16 games after that run (instead of the 6-10 which they wound up doing) to truly be in the hunt.

 

The best that they can probably hope for at this point is to finish fairly strong, and end the season with a solid, respectable record of about 86-76 or 85 77 (similar to the 2013 Orioles.)

I suspect that they had already been daggered by that sweep at the hands of the Cubs ........ but they did manage to come right back the next afternoon and beat the Nationals, taking the series 2 games to 1.

The started this 4-game series 2 and-a-half games behind the Diamondbacks ........ and finished it 1 and-a-half games ahead of them after sweeping the series.

The Mets outscored the Diamondbacks by a combined 26-4 tally overall.

 

As I stated earlier, I don't think that the Mets will be able to land a playoff berth because I believe that the early hole that they dug themselves by going 46-55 in the first 105 games of the season was too deep to dig (and stay) out of ........ I think that the best that they can do is finish with a solid, respectable record of something like 84-78, 85-77, or 86-76.

The Mets finished at 86-76 overall.

They went 40-21 over their final 61 games of the season, good for a .656 Winning Percentage.

It should be an interesting off-season for General Manager Fred Wilpon ........ will he be treating the 2020 Mets like the 46-55 (.455) team they were for the first 62% of the season, like the 40-21 (.656) team that they were for the final 38% of the season, or like a team somewhere in between (around .500.) ???
