The Cubs are in 1st place
.

The Pirates are in last place.

Only 5 and-a-half games separate these 2 teams ........ everybody else in the division is somewhere in between the 2.

We're approaching the half-way point in the season, and the division is mathematically up for grabs ........ although the the Cardinals, the Cubs, and the Brewers all have better overall teams than do the Reds and the Pirates.

The Reds beat the Brewers for the 3rd consecutive time this afternoon.

Nonetheless, the men from southern Ohio are in last place ........ a whopping 3 and-a-half games behind the division-leading Brewers.

As I stated (and expected) in the OP from almost 2 months ago, the Reds and the Pirates have fallen off the pace, while the Cardinals, the Cubs, and the Brewers all remain in contention as legitimate/bona fide playoff contenders.

The Pirates had 3 consecutive playoff appearances in 2013, 2014, and 2015, with records of 94-68, 88-74, and 98-64, respectively.

The Brewers went 6 straight years without making the postseason between 2012 and 2017, including 3 losing seasons of 74-88 in 2013, 68-94 in in 2015, and 73-89 in 2016.

Prior to their return to prominence in 2015, the Cubs had 5 straight losing season between 2010 and 2014, including a record of 61-101 in 2012.

It's been pretty much been the same thing for the last 2-plus seasons (2017, 2018, and 2019), not the past 10 seasons.

Now the Brewers have also fallen off of the pace, and are on life-support at 68-66 overall.

It's the Cardinals and the Cubs battling for top honors in the division, as we head into the home-stretch.

The Brewers have won 7 straight games, and have moved 1/2 a game ahead of the Cubs. ) O.o

(SEPTEMBER 27th)

The Milwaukee Brewers, dealt a severe blow with the season-ending injury to Christian Yelich 2 and-a-half weeks ago, have been beating anybody and everybody ever since ........ the Brewers had won their 5th consecutive game when Yelich went down with a fractured kneecap on September 10th. They have gone 13-2 in the 15 games since, and are on an 18-2 overall run in their last 19 games.

The Milwaukeeans' 2019 season has been a quintessential example of "Next Man Up."

The St. Louis Cardinals hold a 1-game edge in the division, with 3 games left to play. The 3 other NL Central teams have all been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention.
