For you Rule 5 dorks, what day is this clown show this week?  Remind me not to log in for at least 24-48 hours afterwards.

Log off tomorrow. See you again on Saturday. You should be fine then. Take some pictures of some girls for a few days.

For all our snark, I am glad today we get to see what Age 25 Santander looks like next year.  It still needs more than the 50th percentile projection from here, but he has a chance to be a supporting cast contributor eventually, which is more than can be said for a lot of the roster.

I think Santander could be a Legitimate daily player. I’m not sure where he falters in your estimation, he hit well and defended well. Hays in CF of course but that leaves corner spots, and I’d sure rather have Santander than Smith or Stewart or Mancini.

I thought Luke was down on Sharp?

His enthusiasm was blunted?

Sharp is a really solid Rule 5 candidate, just not my favorite.

Let's take the two guys who throw 95-100 and hope they don't turn into pumpkins like Jason Garcia who rarely, if ever, broke 95 after being advertised as a high 90's guy.   Our bullpen sucked last year.   With the extra man and a 13 man bullpen, why not stash some hard throwers with some potential in it?     I don't expect to get a starting middle infielder out of this.   We can pick those types off of waivers if they pop up.    I'm also okay with Martin and Alberto up the middle and would like to see if Ruiz can build off of his 2nd half last year.   That infield is decent defensively if not downright average or better.

Garcia is a guy who popped 100 once in instructs but hadn't been doing it in games. It's funny because the year he had wasn't that bad for a Rule 5 guy, he just regressed from there though.

As we found out with Garcia and Araujo. Even if we successfully carry them on our 26 man roster, are they even worth the 40 man spot the following season?

I’d like to see us come away with a potential IF piece for the future. That could be a guy like Rojas, or a guy like Newton/Javier. Also, I’d like to see us snag an arm. Sharpe, Sheffield or Brown.

I am fine with trusting our FO with whatever direction they go.  I would have no problem with RZNJ's two high ceiling relievers, but I would treat these slots as lottery picks.  IMO, that would mean taking Wander Javier and Phil Bickford.  We are not going anywhere this year - so let's pick up perhaps the top middle infield prospect in the organization and put him in the minors after the season.  I don't think Bickford would be overmatched against major league hitting and could benefit from working with our major league coaches (as would any Rule V pitching prospect).

Our major league team is not going to be good so why not carry Javier for a year?

We have to be the only MLB fanbase that expects us to pick two players in the Rule 5 draft.

I think some Tigers or Royals fans might expect two picks. I might say that about Marlins fans, too, if it were proven they are not just mythical creatures.

Orioles fans might be the only ones who could guess the team will take three players.

I remember the day after the Rule 5 where we picked Joey Rickard. I think it was this same fellow who said if he’d known about Rickard beforehand, he would have put Rickard at the top of his list.

it will be very interesting to look for worthwhile surprise picks

Question: we have two spots open. Is there a deadline for opening up an additional spot before the draft?

If the draft is at 11 AM, could we DFA someone at 9 AM and draft an extra player? Or is that deadline already past?

Isn't that what Detroit just did?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the deadline was to protect your own players. Nothing keeps the O's or anyone from opening another spot now.

    • The outfield might be slick from all the rain. I think that can influence lineup decisions.
    • @Bahama O's Fanor a free trial of any streaming platform. YouTube TV, Directtv, etc.
    • I’ve been rending my garments over Adley and his struggles for months now. But I will say that it seems like a bit of an odd time to come together as a group on the notion of benching him — just as he’s been starting to show some signs of being Adley again.  Over the last week of the season, Adley had a 50% hard hit rate and an average EV of 89.9 MPH. Those numbers absolutely dwarf what he was doing for months, when he was sitting at more like a 26% HH rate and an 85 MPH EV. Anecdotally, I can’t even remember the last time we saw Adley drive a ball into the left-center gap like he did multiple times against MIN. That’s Adley at his very best, and it was a sight for sore eyes.  I’m not sold that he’s 100% back, and I would still stick with McCann catching Burnes tomorrow (especially since using Adley as the DH is viable with a LHP starter in Ragans). But I sincerely doubt we can run the table without at least a few stretches of Adley being Adley — so I think this recent spurt is probably enough to warrant sending him out there every day still, in hopes that he really is getting it locked back in.
    • Apparently, if you just waited to buy tickets, you could just basically go for free. Well done orioles.
    • Well, they likely would not have drafted an overslot SS with the second round pick if they had taken another HS SS first overall, so would you rather have Henderson and Rutschman or just Witt?
    • It’s my understanding that nationally televised games are usually blacked out. Consider a free trial subscription of Fubo if they are still offering it.
    • The Orioles starters absolutely have to do better against the Royals. You can't ask this bullpen to pitch most of the game and expect to win. Right now I probably trust Coulombe the most and Soto (which I never would have guessed a couple weeks back). Perez has been really shaky recently to the point I'm wondering is he nursing a tired arm or minor injuey. Cano hasn't been good as well and O's really need him to get back into a groove. And Akin is usually trustworthy, but only starting the inning clean.
