I do, too. But to me it feels like he's here only if Mancini doesn't make it back. If/when Mancini does make it back it will be a full on Orioles event. They will damn near throw a parade. The roster will have Mancini, Mountcastle, Santander, Nunez, etc. There's just not going to be much roster room or justification for Davis. To me, that's when the plug absolutely has to be pulled.

This is why I don't see Davis back next year. either he's going to do the right thing and retire, or the Orioles will just eat the rest of the contract .

With Mountcastle, Akin and Kremer up and it seems that Elias is willing to turn to the next phase of the rebuild, giving the young guys a chance and offset them with some low priced talent like Iglesias for positions where they don't have anyone ready.

Next year is the year I think the Orioles hope to be mediocre with a chance to surprise in 2022 if guys like Rutschman and Kjerstad are up and ready to contribute.

Is it worth hanging onto Davis for the entire offseason and seeing if COVID shortens next year's season to try and save more money on the contract? Just a thought. We can always cut him if it ends up being a full 162 game season

If they can manage to get 60 games in this year, no reason to think they won't be able to go for 162 next year.   Only question is whether it's still in front of cardboard cutouts or not.

IMO, the Os were hoping to get through this season (or most of it) with Davis on the roster.  The Os have benefited from the reduced compensation on Davis while also have an expanded roster to partially negate his impact on the team - though things could have been more forced if Mancini was productive and healthy.

At this point, if we keep this close, I think Davis should be cut to put a more productive player on the roster during a playoff run.

Have to laugh with us being right there with the NYY given how Davis has been retained, Mancini lost to injury before the season, Santander and Hays lost to injury during season, and Bleier, Castro, Givens and Milone traded.

Prior to 2020, Davis's contract was simply a sunk cost. As it turns out, the pandemic actually helped the Orioles recoup some of the cost, but the team was keeping him as he wasn't blocking anyone...yet. That changes next year as many have pointed out.

There were also whispers of him hanging it up himself which may open the doors for the Orioles to at least negotiate a revised buy-out of the last couple years. He was optimistic after a strong 2020 spring training, but it has been more of the same when he's on the field this year. He may be getting to the point where he's ready to give up. I doubt he would flat out retire and give up the owed money completely, but being open to a settlement that gets him some of the money and saves the Orioles some cash--and clears a roster spot--is possible. At this point, it is hard to imagine he's enjoying himself being this bad.

I'm not sure I buy the theory that a pro-rated salary in a shortened season is helping the O's out much financially with Davis considering they are getting $0 gate revenue and what will likely be somewhere near half their normal revenue share.

Compared to if they had cut him during last season.  If they had he'd still be owed the entire amount.

What if you cut him now and a another wave of the virus kills off half of 2021?

They gotta move on.  This is getting ridiculous, it really is.  I get wanting to minimize the damage to the salary but seriously, they gotta move on.  They have too many players that need at bats and playing time in Baltimore and Davis creating a logjam prohibits the development of some of these guys, it prohibits the franchise from moving forward.

Time to move on, 162 games in 2021 or not.  It doesn't matter, they can't keep living in the past and worrying about this stupid-ass contract and/or kidding themselves that Davis can turn it around.

The early spring could be an issue like last year if the spread starts ramping up (or isn't coming down from the winter fast enough), could be a delayed spring training and maybe not a full 162, but I agree they have it mostly managed whatever truncated season they get wouldn't be enough savings to justify (as the main reason) to keep Davis on the roster.  But, I am with others who think that if he is being paid, he will be on the roster, unfortunately (unless a buy out can be done).

I've wanted him gone for years.

But it isn't my money and I can see why, for financial reasons, the sons would want to hold onto him if they can't come to some sort of buyout.

Yeah that's true. I wonder does it work the same way if he retired? Would he be receiving full pay for 2020 and beyond if he retired this past offseason? I'd assume they'd reach some sort of buyout settlement, but I'm not positive.

If he retires he gets nothing for any of the remaining seasons.  He'd still get the deferred money from seasons already completed.

At least until the conclusion of next spring training, I expect.    To get the best assessment of whether the full season will get played.   I do think they’ll cut him if the season starts on time.   But I’ve been wrong about this before.

I doubt Davis retires, but he won't collect his salary for 2021-22 seasons if he does quit. There's still the issue of the deferred money of $42M owed from 2023 to 2037. Maybe if he retires a part of that deferred amount gets lopped off in addition?

    • Am I crazy for thinking Burnes isn't going to sniff Cole's deal?  I'm thinking like 7/260-280.  I don't think he's going to sniff Cole's deal.  For starters i dont think hes as good a pitcher as Cole was at the time of his signing.  Also, the Yankees aren't going to be in the bidding so that leaves the Mets, Giants, Nats, Orioles as teams that can afford him.  The Sox could too, but they're on the fringe of contention and might opt to develop more with the Yankees and Orioles solidly ahead of them in division.  Only the Mets from that list really seem like teams that would go over 300m for a pitcher, but they will be pressed for money because of the luxury tax.
    • Agree a strong RHP bullpen arm that misses bats would be good to add. Looking at Spotrac I don’t see who it would be. Dominguez could certainly be someone that could fill this role.
    • Definitely leave the flag up.
    • It looks like I misread your post as being about last offseason instead of the 2017-2018 offseason.  My mistake, but does that in any way affect my overall point - you know the part that I made explicit and you left out of your response - that all the old, reflexive Angelosian nonsense no longer automatically applies? I'm unclear on what you're driving at, especially if I have to go back to the 2017-2018 offseason when Peter Angelos might still have been giving input on running the team.  I think it's a stretch to try to draw parallels to those days, or even the John Angelos years, to David Rubenstein potential as an owner.
    • Irsay stealing the Colts in a midnight sneak away is in my top five depressing B-More moments, as well as the dreaded We Are Family Pirates in the ‘79 series. Otherwise, it’s a good bad list.
    • I forgot the name of the movie, but Jimmy Fallon was playing a BoSox superfan (tough role for an NY kid) and it was during the era of the ‘curse’ (right at the end of it actually) — a kid he was coaching asked, “What have the Red Sox ever done for you?” His character didn’t have an answer. But it made me think. The movie was out during the 14-years of losing seasons. I asked myself the same question about whether a lifetime of fandom was worth it. For me, outside of my family - 15 generations or more on the Eastern Shore - the O’s are also part of my DNA.  Win, lose, lose horribly, lose ugly, bad ownership, they just can’t shake me. All that said, I totally understand the frustration. It will take me a little longer to heal from this ugly exit to 2024.
    • In the market and $$$ for SP = Mets, Cubs, BOS, WAS and SFG (depending on Snell opt-out).  That’s enough chairs when music stops for Burnes and Fried to cash in, and still ample for second tier Eovaldi, Manea, Kikuchi, Flaherty.
