Yea, but since then he's been worth -1.1 wins in less than 400 PAs.  A .650 OPS with a -7 glove in LF is how you get flat-out released at 26.  But I'm guessing someone will pick him up and put him in AAA.  Or he could play in an indy league or Japan for the next decade.

That's right!  And so to continue the point, over the last two seasons, in 294 fewer plate appearances, that's 2.7 wins better than Davis for about 45 million less bucks.

One thing that hasn't been said much is that it doesn't appear issues were at the major league level.  None of our ex-players are really playing any better for other teams.  And of the holdovers, there really aren't any that are having a better year.  In other words, our problems weren't on Buck and his staff.

Or....the scars are permanent.

just saying. ;)

It’s $30 mm/yr, not $32 mm.    So, all is well.

I’d never judge a 10 year deal based on a 5-6 week slump, though.

After this year he will be paid $32 million a year for the next 9 years.  He is getting paid $12 million this year.

He also received a 20M signing bonus.

20+12=32.

Something is not right there.    Cot’s has him getting a $20 mm signing bonus, $10 mm salary this year and $30 mm/yr thereafter.   https://legacy.baseballprospectus.com/compensation/cots/nl-west/san-diego-padres/

BB-ref has him getting $12 mm this year and $32 mm/yr thereafter.

Either way, that adds up to $300 mm over 10 years, not $320 mm.

Maybe his $20 mm signing bonus is payable at a rate of $2 mm/yr, rather than up front?    Maybe that makes a difference since he has an opt out (i.e., he’d still get the signing bonus money but not the salary if he opted out)?

The signing bonus cap hit is spread over the length of the contract.

Hanser Alberto has more WAR this season than Machado.

Dylan Bundy has more WAR this season than Bryce Harper.  Or Hanser Alberto.  Ryan Zimmerman ($18M salary) has been way worse than Gerardo Parra.  If you want to pass judgment based on two months you can make all kinds of cartoon comparisons.

Ok so you are saying you only use 2 months worth of data when it aligns with what you want it to say.
