It means that they will move him off of the position where his value is the highest.

They certainly could move him to a new position but unless his bat improves, his value drops a lot if he goes elsewhere.

Look at who is in the outfield and what stats they are putting up.   Adames stats are better than most of them.

Meadows had one good year but fell apart last season.   And he is not a good defensive outfielder.

Keirmaier is on the trade market and does hit well.

Renfroe was non tendered and signed by Boston

Adames hits better than Phillips and Margot.

Adames had an 813 OPS last year and was on a pace to equal or better in 20 homers from 2019.

Arozarena is the only outfielder that is really better than Adames.

But when they go to trade Adames, his value as an OFer is far less than as a SS unless he sees a big increase in his offense.

The Rays don’t normally like to throw away value.  They are too smart for that.

You are so focused on trade you can't see the obvious.   The Rays are trying to win now.   Adames hits  better  than all but one of their outfielders.   They have no reason to trade him.  He is cheap in 2021 and they need him in their lineup.

Just because you think he would be good for the O's does not mean the Rays want to trade him.

Which is why they traded their best pitcher?

The Rays don't play the win now game.  They are concerned with winning now and winning in the future.

The Rays just traded their best pitcher and one of their best relievers.

And I agree that the Rays may not trade him.  I would like you to point out where I said he was definitely available?

Glasnow, Yarbrough, Fleming, Wacha.  And they are not finished.

Snell was a planned trade.  They signed him to a long term contract and when his salary reached 10m they traded him.  They never planned to keep him for the whole contract.

So?

They are not in a "win now" mode like the Padres are.  They never are.  They will never be the team that gives up Torres for a Chapman rental.

So when you said  "I think it’s more likely they use him as a trade chip."  You didn't really mean it.  You were just being misleading.

They just went to World Series.   They will probably have the best pitching in the division in 2021.

They aren't in "win now" mode.

general manager Erik Neander admitted Tuesday (via Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times) that the Rays “are not as good a team without him.” Despite that, Neander insisted to Topkin and other reporters that the Rays, who won the American League in 2020, still plan to compete for a championship.

“Our goal is to win a World Series,” Neander said. “Want to make that that very, very clear. … It’s our philosophy, it’s our belief that the best way for us to achieve that goal is to construct playoff-caliber teams year in, year out. For every team that we put out there to have a shot. To avoid the valleys. To not take any years off.”

“We have a lot of confidence in the group that we have here and we’ve got a lot of time left to continue to build this club out and to get this puzzle where we want it.”

They are not done adding.

I think you are confusing trying to win and being in "win now" mode.

I don't think the Rays are going to do anything to hurt their chances at long term contention to add a piece to help this season.  I don't think they would refuse a solid offer for a piece to help this season (see Snell).

A team in "win now" mode trades Torres for Chapman or trades for Andrew Miller.  They trade for Snell and Darvish.

The Rays are not rebuilding.  They are not saying they will take 2021 off from contention.  They just built up one of the best farm systems even more by making the Snell trade.  And they are saying they still have time to put the pieces together to win in 2021.  They have even more good prospects to trade for whatever they need.

They will use him as a trade chip, assuming Franco stays healthy.

But they may not do it until the deadline or next offseason.

Only way he is in the 2022 roster is if his bat improves and he shows he can be an asset at third or the OF.  It’s possible...but I don’t think it’s overly likely either.

    • Am I crazy for thinking Burnes isn't going to sniff Cole's deal?  I'm thinking like 7/260-280.  I don't think he's going to sniff Cole's deal.  For starters i dont think hes as good a pitcher as Cole was at the time of his signing.  Also, the Yankees aren't going to be in the bidding so that leaves the Mets, Giants, Nats, Orioles as teams that can afford him.  The Sox could too, but they're on the fringe of contention and might opt to develop more with the Yankees and Orioles solidly ahead of them in division.  Only the Mets from that list really seem like teams that would go over 300m for a pitcher, but they will be pressed for money because of the luxury tax.
    • Agree a strong RHP bullpen arm that misses bats would be good to add. Looking at Spotrac I don’t see who it would be. Dominguez could certainly be someone that could fill this role.
    • Definitely leave the flag up.
    • It looks like I misread your post as being about last offseason instead of the 2017-2018 offseason.  My mistake, but does that in any way affect my overall point - you know the part that I made explicit and you left out of your response - that all the old, reflexive Angelosian nonsense no longer automatically applies? I'm unclear on what you're driving at, especially if I have to go back to the 2017-2018 offseason when Peter Angelos might still have been giving input on running the team.  I think it's a stretch to try to draw parallels to those days, or even the John Angelos years, to David Rubenstein potential as an owner.
    • Irsay stealing the Colts in a midnight sneak away is in my top five depressing B-More moments, as well as the dreaded We Are Family Pirates in the ‘79 series. Otherwise, it’s a good bad list.
    • I forgot the name of the movie, but Jimmy Fallon was playing a BoSox superfan (tough role for an NY kid) and it was during the era of the ‘curse’ (right at the end of it actually) — a kid he was coaching asked, “What have the Red Sox ever done for you?” His character didn’t have an answer. But it made me think. The movie was out during the 14-years of losing seasons. I asked myself the same question about whether a lifetime of fandom was worth it. For me, outside of my family - 15 generations or more on the Eastern Shore - the O’s are also part of my DNA.  Win, lose, lose horribly, lose ugly, bad ownership, they just can’t shake me. All that said, I totally understand the frustration. It will take me a little longer to heal from this ugly exit to 2024.
    • In the market and $$$ for SP = Mets, Cubs, BOS, WAS and SFG (depending on Snell opt-out).  That’s enough chairs when music stops for Burnes and Fried to cash in, and still ample for second tier Eovaldi, Manea, Kikuchi, Flaherty.
