Marlins trade targets?

The Marlins boast 2 solid options on the left side of the IF.  Miguel Rojas, who can play an above SS and third base and Brian Anderson, who is a solid third baseman.

Rojas is owed 5M (plus has a 500k buyout in 2022) and Anderson is arb eligible for the first time this season.

I would guess Rojas is too much money unless we can get them to eat salary or take on a contract but a match could be here.

Jazz Chisholm, a top 60ish prospect, appears to be ready to go(or is close to it).  He is a SS.  So, either of these guys could be available.

The target here would be Anderson but Rojas is a good target as well.

The Marlins are always looking to save money, so this could be another potential match.

We’re still 2+ years away from making a deal to add anyone. We don’t have an overwhelming area of depth to even to a strength for strength trade.

Our best hope is to be able to trade away as many of our players under contract or in arbitration as possible.

Cobb - Probably a pipedream, but we could get close to a Cashner return depending on performance and how much salary we pay.

Severino - if he has a decent 1st half then I see him traded at the deadline. AR should be pretty close. We could get by with Sisco and a backup until then.

Armstrong/Fry - Players in Arb that if they perform will be traded at the deadline. This team doesn’t need bullpen pieces tying up 40 man spots and salary.

Mancini - We take the best deal we can get.

If you don’t clear up spots on the 40 man you risk losing guys in the rule 5 draft.

Rojas is 31, and last season was his first good year, Im pretty sure he could be had for a reasonable price assuming the Marlins want to clear SS for another player. Anderson looks like the better player, but only at 3B, and probably will cost alot more.

If we're avoiding acquiring a good 27 year old proven 3Bman because he'll be a free agent in 2024, we'll never stop being in rebuild mode.  Anderson's a good target if Miami is trying to lower their payroll.

Rojas seems unlikely for us because we just traded a similar version of him, and I don't see Miami paying a significant part of his contract to trade him - since most of the reason they'd trade him would be to save money.

The only thing issue I have with this is that the Marlins could decide saving 3 million is better than nothing (ie, they pick up 2M of the contract).

Bur overall, I agree with your sentiment here.

There is plenty of depth to make multiple deals.

“Plenty of depth” is quite a rosy look. We’ve got some pieces we could trade but then the farm would be barren yet again. You’re a couple years too soon IMO

I don’t agree unless you mean we will have guys further away from helping.  I would agree with that.

And btw, you HAVe to make decisions on some of these guys soon because of your 40 man roster, having to promote them, etc...you can’t hold onto everyone or else you will lose players for nothing.

And btw, if we are getting young, cost controlled talent, I will happily trade guys to get them.

I think it’s best to wait out a few of our current top prospects to see what we’ve got and go from there. If we were to build a potentially competitive team now it’d be from the ground up. We’ve literally got nothing to feel confident in building around yet. Let’s see how Rutschman, Rodriguez, Hall, Hays, Diaz etc look this time next year and go from there.

Waiting things out could really backfire..not to mention, I’m not talking about trading the top guys unless Marquez is coming back to us and that is an obvious move.

I highly doubt anyone in our 10-20 prospect range is going to net a major league difference maker.

They certainly could be pieces in the package.  And it depends on how you define difference maker.  2-3 WAR players aren’t necessarily difference makers but they are still valuable pieces.

    • We have an off day to give Mounty an extra days rest. We have an off day next Monday as well with the ASB looming. Mounty is close to making the ASG so I doubt he wants to hit the IL.  Meaning a RP would have to go for Mayo. I think we’re trying to keep Urias this season and move on from him in the offseason. Mayo is on target to be added as our extra player in September unless we have an injury.  It sure would be nice to bring Mayo up and let him get a ton of ABs to be ready for the playoffs.  At the end of the day, what’s worth more?  Urias as an insurance policy that shouldn’t get ABs in the playoffs, or developing Mayo that should get playoff ABs?
    • When Kremer comes back and if we get a #3 starter, would that help bolster the pen? You can move Suarez and Irvin/Povich into the pen.
    • Those three starts were going against @NYY, @Hou, and Texas. He’s slated to go @Oak with an extra day of rest.  We have to differentiate between regular season SP and playoff SP. Just like how we have to do with regular season RP and playoff RP.  Irvin, Povich, Kremer, and Suarez, are fine options to get you through 162.  Burnes, and Grayson, are our playoff options right now. We need a game 2/3 SP. The playoff RP core looks to be Kimbrel, Cano, Webb, Coloumbe(if healthy), and Perez. It would be nice to add two arms to the playoff RPs.
    • I had thought Hell’s Bells was about trying to avoid your wife and family to watch O’s games.
    • Westburg’s lack of lateral quickness has been pointed out there.  Then again, everyone will look less quick when compared to Mateo. I think Mayo’s more of a 3B/1B with us. Position versatility. That’s not a knock on him at 3B, but that we like players in different positions to match up. Mayo is no different.
    • Irvin’s next start is scheduled for @ Oakland. As of right now, we’d be scheduled to have the back half of the rotation for the Yankees series right before the break. I could see us tinkering with the rotation so that we have Burnes and Grayson at least going vs the Yankees.  I could see us going with a 6 man rotation after the ASG. Especially if we were to make a trade for Scherzer.
    • Thank you for your advocacy for Jackson on CF position.  My reasons almost same as yours .  Having said that , Jackson should also work on 2B .  There’s too many players and limited positions , ABs have to be rationed as well.  The upcoming deadline will likely reveal who’s staying and who’s leaving.  In the meantime , they should let Jackson heal any injuries and refine his positional skills
