I want better than a .187 hitting catcher as backup to Weiters

How about Ramon Hernandez?

Are we just clearing house and finding Wieters a scrap heap backup? Don't get me wrong - that's fine w/ me. I can't tell you how many days this past summer where I found comfort in the fact that I wouldn't have to watch Hernandez play that much longer...

We should be able to deal Hernandez this winter. Lote os teams will be looking for a catcher, slim pickings out there.

Sincerely hope you're right. I guess it'll come down to how much salary are we willing to eat. I'm sure there is a sense of urgency to get Wieters in there, as there should be.

The money might be a big issue. I doubt they'll get a lot for Hernandez unless they eat salary. Trouble is, Angelos is already munching on Gibbons' final year, and there's a chance he mite have to eat contract for Walker and/or Baez.Would he balk at yet another helping?

I just hope that they don't keep Wieters down another year because Ramon's salary requires that they keep him in the lineup.

Let's see.

1. Markakis

2. Jones

3. Scott

4. Roberts

5. Huff

6. Mora

7. Ramon

8. Guthrie

9. Albers

10. Baez

11. Hoey

12. Johnson

13. Liz

14. Matusz

15. Mickolio

16. Olson

17. Patton

18. Ray

19. Sarfate

20. Sherrill

21. Walker

22. Salazar

23. Montanez

24. Bergesen

25. D Hernandez

26. Reimold

That's the first cut.

27. Bierd

28. DCab

29. Quiroz

30. Spoone

31. Bass

32. Cormier

33. Perez

34. Penn

35. Moore

36. McCrory

One spot for the Rule 5 Draft.

That leaves for three spots: Burres, Castillo, Cherry, Deza, Miller, Simon, Waters, Santos, Cintron, Fahey, Fiorentino, Costanzo

Gone: Loewen, Castro, Millar, Payton.

I would take:

37. Costanzo (because of his potential)

38. Castillo (because he did well in the majors, is lefthanded and has options)

39. is a pick 'em

I would keep him on the roster for now for too reasons:

1. He is only 26 and can still improve.

2. The O's don't have anyone better as the backup.

If they get someone better then he could be released but not yet.

That is a pretty good list and I mostly agree. However, I would not protect Salazar, Costanzo, and Cormier. Taking these three guys out leaves us at 35 spots taken. I would keep Burres, who would benefit from decreased work as long LH in pen. (That makes 36.) You have room for one rule 5 pick and three F/A's.

That said, I have a few questions...On what date can you put a player on the 15-day DL? And, if we carried a few more through the rule 5 and released them to make room for the possible signing of F/A's, would that be allowed?

I would also like to see Quiroz stay here. You can't really hold his offensive stats against him when he only played sporadically. I think he did a good job defensively out there; and if Ramon ends up our 1B this year, Quiroz will be more than adequate as Wieters' back up.

On another note...assuming we don't get a taker for Ramon and Melvin, I'd be curious to see what kind of numbers they could put up as the 1B and DH/part-time 3B respectively. If they would accept those roles that is.
